Cloth Over Boards. Condition: Very Good. Dust Jacket Condition: Fair. First Edition. This book has been bound in a black cloth spine, brown cloth over boards. There is no corner bumping of this book. Light wear at the head and foot of the spine. Faint mark on the upper edge of the text block. Text is very clean and tight in it's binding. Date inked small on back end paper. The Dust Jacket is unclipped with some edge wear. Especially on the upper edge. Chip on upper edge of the flap hinge. DJ spine section is missing 1/8th from head and foot. We have placed it in a protective cover. Size: 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" Tall.

Book is moderately shelf worn and sunned to extremities. Tail shows some whitening from rubbing. Front paste down has some wrinkling and discoloration that seems to be a manufacturer's defect rather than after market damage. Text block is lightly toned and top edge is foxed. Dust jacket is bumped and rubbed with some chipping and a closed tear to top of front panel near spine. Rear panel is toned. Jacket designed by Alex Gotfryd and Richard Huebner. Hardcover. First edition; brown endpapers with publisher's device, device also on title-page, sparse in-text illustrations; deckled fore-edge, publisher's tan and black boards, device to upper cover, spine lettered in gilt, uncut pictorial dustjacket lettered in black and white (lightly rubbed on extremities); clean and very good copy; 191, [i]p. A very good copy of Harry Mathews' second novel, portions of which were first published in The Paris Review, Mother, and Art & Literature. Mathews was an American expat from New York who lived and wrote in Paris as well as the first American member of the French literary society, Oulipo. Tlooth was the first book published by 'Paris Review Editions,' a joint venture of the New York publisher, Doubleday & Company, and the literary quarterly, The Paris Review. At the time, Mathews was in a relationship with an editor at the Review, Maxine Groffsky. This edition was published seven years before their headquarters were moved from Paris to New York City.
