General Tom Thumb, famed entertainer for P.T. Barnum. 8'' x 5.5''. Original full blue cloth with gilt-stamped titles. In original unclipped ($2.00) color pictorial jacket. Illustrated endpapers. Illustrated by Fritz Eichenberg. 260 pages. Warmly inscribed by Hunt of the half title page: "Here he is, Margaret, as a / gift from your mother, and / from me, as your friend. / Mabel Leigh Hunt / Christmas, 1942." Mild toning to jacket with some fading to spine. Cloth a bit rubbed with a few small spots of soil. Some bumping to extremities. Overall, well preserved. Very good in a very good plus jacket. Signed.

Carte de Visite. 10 x 6 cm. Image, 8.5 x 5.5 cm., with caption title below, the word "over" written in ink. On the verso are the names of Tom and Lavinia, signed in type: "Compliments of Charles S. Stratton, compliments of Lavinia Warren Stratton." Accompanied by a small signature card (6 x 12.5 cm.) with the autograph of "Countess M. L. Magri formerly Mrs. General Tom Thumb Middleboro, Mass.," all in her hand. Slight crease in card, some uneven toning. Lavinia married the Count after the death of Tom. They set up a stand in Middleborough, Massachusetts where she was born and raised.

George Cruikshank (illustrator). First Edition. To the narrow spine: "London Stage. Price Three Pence. Published by Sherwood, Jones and Co. Paternoster Row." This publisher's price is not found in the bound editions of London Stage. Cruikshank's signature and (probably most importantly) Cohn's definitive label all point to this as the first issue (Cohn's 'original number') before the plays were bound. Cf. Richard J. H. Douglas, "The Works of George Cruikshank" (London, 1903) #79 & Cohn's #615 for the 1830 edition: "Tom Thumb. A Burletta." Blue rampant Lion stamp affixed to p. 12. Late nineteenth century folding paper case separated, creased & worn but has affixed to it: 1. Clipped catalogue entry stating "George Cruikshank's own copy with his bold autograph signature." 2. Bookplate of Albert M. Cohn, (author of George Cruikshank: A Catalogue Raisonne, London, 1924), 3. Cohn's type written label: "TOM THUMB. The Original Number of the London Stage. 4 ½ x 6 ½ inch. He signed on the lower border so it is legible. She signed across the top of the image and the writing is light. The couple is shown in formal wear. The backstamp is from Olliver's photography studio in Brooklyn. There is light wear to the upper corners and other minor faults.Count Magri was the stage name of the Italian person of short stature (1849-1920). He married Lavinia Warren (1841-1919), General Tom Thumb's widow, in 1885. Warren was the wife of General Tom Thumb (Charles Sherwood Stratton)and later married Count Magri.
