Je nach Quellenlage läßt sich für historische Zeiträume zu diesen Fragen viel oder wenig sagen; für die Frühzeit sind sie jedenfalls in Rechnung zu stellen. Von der Zwei- oder 'Mehrsprachigkeit, worunter wir die Fähigkeit des Einzelnen verstehen, abwechselnd verschiedene historische Sprachen (Spanisch, Französisch, Lateinisch, usw.) zu gebrauchen, hat man als 'Diglossie' die in einer Sprachgemeinschaft übliche Verwendung verschiedener Entwicklungsstufen ein und derselben historischen Sprache in spezifischen Bereichen unterschieden, wie z.B. beim heutigen Griechisch, wo die Dhimotiki ('Volkssprache') im praktischen Leben und in der Literatur herrscht, während die Katharevusa die vor allem morphologisch dem Altgriechischen nahesteht die offizielle Sprache der Verwaltung, der Kirche, eines Teils der Wissenschaft, der Presse ist.
