In Görlitz besuchte er… das Gymnasium (ab 1694), ehe er 1702 kurzzeitig auch das Friedrich-Werder-Gymnasium in Berlin besuchte, wo er mit den Pietistenhäuptern Joachim Lange (s.d.), dessen Rektor, Philipp Jakob Spener (s.d.) und Karl Hildebrand Freiherr von Canstein (s.d.) eine Bekanntschaft anknüpfte. 1703 studierte er sodann als Schüler August Hermann Fanckes (s.d.) Theologie in Halle, dem Zentrum der pietistischen Bewegung. Obwohl er von zarter Gesundheit war und die Ausbildung nicht abgeschlossen hatte, wurde er 1705 unter Vermittlung von Lange zum Missionsdienst berufen und zusammen mit seinem Studienkollegen Heinrich Plütschau (s.d.) von der Dänisch-halleschen Mission, einer Stiftung des dänischen Königs Friedrich IV. (1699-1730), in die Kolonie Tranquebar an der Südostküste Indiens (nahe Tanjore) entsandt. Sie waren die ersten planmäßig ausgesandten Missionare des dt. Protestantismus und zudem die ersten ev. Sendboten in Indien überhaupt. Am 9. Juli 1706 in Tranquebar angelangt, konnten sie bereits ein Jahr später die ersten Tamilen (»Malabaren«) und Mischlinge (»Portugiesen«) taufen und eine kleine lutherische Gemeinde gründen, die bis 1712 etwa 200 Glieder umfaßte; 1707 war auch der Grundstein für die »Neu-Jerusalemskirche« gelegt worden (neu errichtet 1718). Von der dänischen Kolonialbehörde angefeindet, die durch die Missionsarbeit ihre Handelsinteressen gefährdet sah, wurde Z. ein Jahr später mehrere Monate inhaftiert (1708/09). - Während der Gründungsjahre waren zehn Missionare tätig, die weitgehend der hallesche Pietismus bereitgestellt hatte. Unter ihnen war Z. die überragende Persönlichkeit, der zum Bahnbrecher der ev. Mission und Kirche in Indien und überhaupt zum »Prototyp des ev. Missionars« (A. Lehmann) avancierte. Sprachlich ausnehmend begabt, widmete er sich besonders der Literaturarbeit. So übersetzte er schon bald das Tamil-NT (ersch. 1714/15) und das Tamil-AT (bis zu Ri; vervollständigt von B. Schultze, 4 Tl. 1723-28); hinzu traten Luthers Kleiner Katechismus (1715), ein Tamil-Gesangbuch (1715), eine Tamil-Grammatik (lat. 1716); zudem schuf er die Grundlagen zum Tamil-Wörterbuch und zu Lexika. Schließlich übersetzte er Tamil-Texte ins Deutsche (u.a. Ulaga Nidi oder Weltliche Gerechtigkeit, 1708; ersch. 1930) und verfaßte Abhandlungen über die tamilische Kultur und Religion (u.a. die »Beschreibung des Malabarischen Heidenthums«, 1711; ersch. 1926, u. die »Genealogie der Malabarischen Götter«, 1713; ersch. 1867), die allerdings, weit von Objektivität entfernt, von eurozentristisch-christlichem Superioritätsgefühl bestimmt sind (wenn sie z.B. die hinduistische Religion als ein »vom Teuffel verblendetes Fabelwerck« diskriminieren). Über die sprach- und religionsgeschichtlichen Forschungen hinaus, die ihn zum ersten dt. Drawidologen machten, gründete er Schulen (u.a. 1707 die wohl erste Mädchenschule Indiens) und ein Seminar (1716), um die Ausbildung einheimischer Lehrer und Pastoren sicherzustellen. Überdies sorgte er sich um die Sozialarbeit; der »Dienst der Seelen« sollte mit dem »Dienst des Leibes« eng verbunden sein. - Z.s theologisches Denken wurzelt in der luth. Orthodoxie und ist von frühaufklärerischem Optimismus durchzogen. Seine Verkündigung versuchte an der natürlichen Gotteserkenntnis und der tamilischen Lebenswelt anzuknüpfen und zielte auf die Errichtung einer bodenständigen Kirche, in der die hauptsächlich aus den unteren sozialen Schichten stammenden jungen Tamil-Christen ihre Volkstümlichkeit weitgehend wahren konnten. - Wichtigste Erben von Z.s 13jähriger Pionierarbeit und der darauf aufbauenden Tranquebarmission, die ein markantes Bindeglied zwischen früherer Kolonialmission und neuzeitlicher Gesellschaftsmission darstellt, wurden die heutige Evangelisch-Lutherische Tamilkirche (TELC) und weite Teile der Südindischen Kirche (CSI) in Tamil Nadu.
