Add to basketHardback. Condition: Very Good. First Edition. THE TRANSVAAL FROM WITHIN A Private Record of Public Affairs. J. P. Fitzpatrick. William Heinemann, London 1899 First Edition 452pp Hardback. This copy is bound in original green linen covered boards with gilt titling to the spineThere is some mild spotting to the prelims but this does not penetrate further into the text block. A dust wrapper is not present. A fascinating read of the events in the Transvaal leading up to and during the Jamieson Raid, written by one of the participants in the events. The writer is better known as Sir Percy FitzPatrick author of the children's classic 'Jock of the Bushveld'. Although modern historians are giving Paul Kruger a positive gloss in true revisionist fashion, his government fares very badly in contemporary accounts. This book struggles hard to be fair minded and even handed but fails to exonerate this corrupt, inefficient regime which so angered the mining magnates of the Rand. However there is no doubt that the raid was disastrous in its planning and execution. From this account, the Johannesburg group tried to prevent the adventure, but Jamieson was under the control of the Cape administration, and was himself something of a loose cannon. Ref Z3.

Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. No Jacket. 1st Edition. From the preface: "It was originally designed to compile a statement of the occurrences of 1895-6 in the Transvaal and of the conditions which led up to them, in the hope of removing the very grave misunderstandings which existed. Everybody else had been heard and judged, the Uitlander had only been judged. It therefore seemed proper that somebody should attempt to present the case for the Uitlander". Here is a very good+ copy of the first US edition, in the original publisher's blue cloth. The boards are clean and unbumped, with only minimal wear to the spine ends and extremities. Inside the binding is tight and the hinges uncracked. There are no ownership or other markings and the pages are clean and bright.
