Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. Dust Jacket Condition: Very Good. 1st Edition. World Publishing Co., Cleveland. 1947. 366 pages. First Forum Books edition, first printing stated, April 1947. The first American hardcover edition was printed by Knopf, in 1935. Twelve years later, World Publishing Co., out of Cleveland, would release the second American hardcover edition, under their Forum Books imprint. This release precedes the Academy Award-winning film by the same name, starring Humphrey Bogart, which was released in the USA, the following year. The DJ makes no mention of the upcoming film. The rare Leo Manso designed DJ is present, on this uncommon edition. $1.00 price, coded 0100, is still present on upper flap. DJ shows light wear, minor soiling, and minor shallow chipping. Rust-color hue on spine is sunned. An unobtrusive, barely noticeable, tiny green ink spot on spine. Book is tight. Binding and hinges are strong and sound. Pages and endpapers are clean. Tiny, vintage bookseller stamp, stamped at bottom of front endpaper; Vales Bookshop, Hamilton. Minimal shelf-rubbing along edges. Previous owner's name neatly written on top of front pastedown, hidden underneath DJ flap. Book's only flaw is paper remnants of an old DJ protector on black boards, near binding. With patience and care, this could be cleaned off. An uncommon early printing of the hardcover classic, in its original dust jacket.

Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. Dust Jacket Condition: Very Good. Jacket illustration by John D. Evans (illustrator). 1st Edition. The first English edition, translated from the German by Basil Creighton, a translation which the author said he actually preferred to his own for the (later) U.S. edition. 1934 date to title page, no later dates nor any mention of later printings to copyright page. Gilt titles bright to spine, no visible corner rub. "Very good" jacket with minor chipping and tears along top and bottom edges is not price-clipped, still priced "7s. 6d. net" to bottom of front flap. Cinnamon topstain is very nice. Curiously, a Previous Owner (we surmise) has written her name in pen upside down to bottom of the blank dust jacket rear panel: "Melitza Korelius Mozart / H.M.V." Famously filmed for Warner Bros. in 1948 by John Huston with Humphrey Bogart, Walter Huston, Tim Holt, and of course the immortal Alfonso Bedoya. 295 pp. Reduced from $2,250.
