This book is a rare French translation of his social and philosophical critique written in German in 1883 - Die conventionellen Lügen der Kulturmenschheit [The Conventional Lies of Our Civilization], in which he shows what he believes to be the essential falsity of some of the social, ethical and religious standards of modern civilization. François Collin (or Colin) de Blamont (16901760) was born and died at Versailles, spending most of his career in the employ of the royal family, organizing and composing music for private concerts at Versailles and Marly, some for Louis XV and others for Queen Marie. 'Most of his music was composed for the stage. Pièces d'occasioncelebrated royal births and marriages. More important, Collin and [Louis] Fuzelier created theBallet-héroïquewith theirFêtes grecques et romaines (1723) which they described as a ballet "d'une espèce toute nouvelle". The work was an immediate success and was revived up to1770' (Grove online). The prologue to Les festes grecques et romaines features Apollo and the three Muses Clio (Muse of history), Erato (lyric and erotic poetry), and Terpsichore (dance). 'Concerning the revival of 1733 the Mercure reported: "never has a revival at the Opéra been more brilliant or applauded". Neither the later ballets-héroïques nor the pastorale-héroïque, Diane et Endymion(1731), rivalled the success of the earlier work' (ibid.). Leather-backed marbled boards, titled and ruled in gilt on spine, marbled endpapers. The first publication in any language of the most complete work on Islamic astronomical instruments to have survived from the medieval period. Translated into French by the astronomer and self-styled orientalist Jean Jacques Sédillot (1777-1832), the work was published posthumously by his son, Louis-Pierre-Eugène Amélie Sédillot, who has inscribed this copy: "A Monsieur Dureau de La Malle, Membre de l'Institut", signed, "L. Am. Sédillot". The recipient, Adolphe Dureau de la Malle (1777-1857), was a contemporary of Sédillot's father, and himself an established historian and geographer who published on the topography and agriculture of ancient Rome. Both men were precursors to what would become the modern study of the history of science: a field with medieval Arabic texts at its heart. - The original author of this particular Arabic text, Abu Ali al-Hassan al-Marrakushi, was a widely respected late 13th century Moroccan academic who advanced astronomy and mathematics, especially trigonometry. He wrote on each of these topics in the work translated here, under its original title "Jami' al-mabadi' wa'l-ghayat fi 'ilm al-miqat" ("Collection of the Principles and Objectives in the Science of Timekeeping"). It is the most famous section of this work - that on the use and creation of astronomical instruments - which is preserved in Sédillot's translation. The numerous lithographed plates included at the end of the text, following in centuries of manuscript tradition, are a particularly important inclusion. - Light exterior wear, spine rebacked. With the bookplate of the Maisonneuve publishing house at La Tour de Babel bookshop (after 1849, when Maisonneuve relocated to the premises).
