    1. ALS to unnamed member of the Athenaeum Club, from Cleveland Row, June 25 1825(?), 13 lines on 1p 8vo. Asking for support in the Athenaeum election. The Athenaeum Club had been founded the previous year. 2. ALS to Mrs Mathews, from 'Fulham Monday' (August 1834), 48 lines on 4pp 8vo. Affectionately wishing her farewell before her departure to USA. Mrs Mathews, Anne Jackson, second wife of Charles Mathews, comedian, made their last US tour in 1834/5, Charles dying shortly after the tour had been cut short through his ill health. Theodore Hook, 1788-1841, 'man of letters', editor of John Bull newspaper and practical joker. Coleridge praised him, no doubt tongue in cheek, as being 'as true a genius as Dante'. Hook shared Lamb's liking for puns and they both contributed to the Literary Gazette. PLEASE NOTE: For customers within the UK this item is subject to VAT at 20%.
