A conjoined facsimile reprint of the first book on printin…g in English, and the first English type specimen book. One of 500 copies printed by Henry Morris composed in Van Dijck types on Frankfurt paper with the title-page in blue and black. The first work is Richard Atkyns' 1664 work, THE ORIGIN AND GROWTH OF PRINTING, the first English book devoted to the subject of printing; the second is William Caslon's first English type specimen book (1764). Illustrated with specimens of printing types. Both books reproduced in facsimile in one volume. Carey S. Bliss who contributes the introductions to both books was curator of rare books at the Huntington Library and author of several books on printing history, private presses, etc. Facsimile of Atkyn's essay (London, 1664) (36 pages), and A Specimen of Printing Types (1764), with its numerous type illustrations. The introductory text was composed in Van Dijck types and printed on Frankfurt paper. The facsimiles, from 1664 and 1764 respectively, were printed on Mohawk Text by the Blair Printing Company.
