Matthaus Merian began publishing the 'Theatrum Europaeum' in 1633, it was not finished until 1738 by which time 21 volumes had been issued including some 20,000 pages of text, 720 maps, plans, views and other engravings and nearly 700 portraits. A birds-eye view of the old Canton of Unterwalden in central Switzerland south of Lake Lucerne. It now consists of two Cantons; Obwalden and Nidwalden.

Other. Copper engraving, hand colored in outline when published. This fine engraving shows the view of the southern area with the surroundings of Lake Lucerne and was ublished in Gabriel Bodenehr's famous serious "Europeans Macht und Pracht", a series of engravings depicting city views, plans, fortresses and castles in Europe. Many plates often are showing fortifications in Hungary and Southeast Europe, Spain, Belgium, Austria and Germany. Gabriel Bodenehr was during this period a successful publisher for maps and prints in Augsburg in Southern Germany. A beautiful view of the Swiss canton of Unterwald. Towns, villages, rivers and lakes are shown and labelled. A key at the bottom lists significant buildings and landmarks, which are picked out in the view by letter. In the top left corner three soldiers in armour stand in a group surrounded by a laurel wreath with a coat of arms depicting a key at the bottom. Below this is a compass rose. Copper engraving.
