Add to basketSoft cover. Condition: Very Good. 1st Edition. Vanity Fair: A Novel Without a Hero by William Makepeace Thackeray — edited with an introduction and notes by Geoffrey and Kathleen Tillotson. Houghton Mifflin Company / Riverside Press Cambridge, Boston, 1963 — Riverside Editions B66 (Trade Paperback, $2.25 cover price) Book Condition : Very Good−. Octavo trade paperback in fuchsia and white pictorial wrappers; 666 pages plus appendix; 40 illustration plates drawn by the author. Covers with light edge wear, rubbing, tanning, and soiling; small lower front corner crease — honest surface wear for a 62-year-old course paperback. Light spine creasing. Pages clean and unmarked with light uniform age-toning — exceptionally clean for a heavily assigned academic text. No ownership markings, stamps, price stickers, or remainder marks, except 15cent mark on first page. Original $2.25 cover price stated. A sound and presentable copy. Edition / Printing Notes Houghton Mifflin Company / Riverside Press Cambridge, Boston; first published January 1, 1963; Riverside Editions B66; not stated, presumed first edition. Edited with an introduction and notes by Geoffrey and Kathleen Tillotson, University of London — the authoritative scholarly edition of the text for the period, widely assigned in university courses throughout the 1960s and 1970s. Includes 40 illustration plates drawn by Thackeray himself; bibliography; xli pages of editorial apparatus including introduction and notes; 680 pages total. The Riverside Editions series was Houghton Mifflin's flagship scholarly paperback imprint for college courses — a historically significant quality paperback series comparable in prestige to the Norton Critical Editions. A satirical epic of love and social adventure set during the Napoleonic Wars, Vanity Fair follows the trials and tribulations of two young women — the charming and amoral Becky Sharp and the sweet, loyal Amelia Sedley — as they navigate elopements and betrayals, fortunes made and lost, and battles both military and domestic. At its centre is one of the most unforgettable characters in nineteenth-century fiction — Becky Sharp, a panoramic figure in Thackeray's masterpiece of English social satire. The Tillotson Riverside Edition is the standard scholarly text of this period, widely regarded as the most authoritative editorial treatment of the novel for classroom use, and includes Thackeray's own 40 illustrations alongside Geoffrey and Kathleen Tillotson's authoritative introduction and notes from the University of London. An exceptionally clean copy of a heavily assigned course text — unmarked and unwritten throughout, which is genuinely rare in this format. Signed by Author(s). …

If you are going to read or give the gift of one of the classics of American Literature, why not do so with a well-made and very handsome vintage book. I am pleased to offer: Vanity Fair A Novel without a Hero, by William Makepeace Thackeray, illustrated with two hundred drawings made by the Author for the First Edition. This medium-sized but rather thick leather-bound book (6 ¾ x 9 ½ inches, 759 pages) was published by the Easton Press of Norwalk, Connecticut, dated 1979 as part of their 100 Greatest Books Ever Written Series. The book is bound in a dark blue leather with elaborate gilt decorations on the cover and gilt decorations and titles on the spine, with four raised bands. The page edges are full gilt, there is an ivory satin ribbon page-marker and the endpapers are ivory moire. There is a full color portrait of Thackeray as the frontispiece, and as noted, 200 drawings by the Author dispersed in the text. Condition: This book is in very good condition. The leather-bound boards are clean, bright and unbumped. There has been some very minor flaking to the gilt of the decorations, in particular the outer gilt frame on the both covers. Inside, the book is unmarked and the pages are bright and clean throughout. Both hinges are intact, and the binding is tight, sound and square. This book is not ex-library or a remainder.…

Paperback. Condition: new. Paperback. "Backgrounds and Contexts" is arranged under three headings. "Composition and Publication History" combines modern scholarship with contemporary materials to elucidate the novel's composition and publication history and present different aspects of Thackeray's life and work. "Reception" reprints ten contemporary reviews, both published and unpublished, that suggest the tone of Vanity Fair's initial reception. "Contexts" includes materials relating to governesses, historical novels, the Battle of Waterloo and the military, bankruptcy, regency fashions, and the London landscape, all of which figure prominently in the novel. "Criticism" is a collection of nine essays written between 1900 and 1990 that reveal the developing response to Vanity Fair. William C. Brownell, David Cecil, G. Armour Craig, John Loofbourow, Peter K. Garrett, Richard Barickman, Susan MacDonald, Myra Stark, Ina Ferris, Catherine Peters, and James Phelan provide varied perspectives. A Chronology and Selected Bibliography are also included. The text of this Norton Critical Edition of Thackeray's acclaimed 1848novel is based on the Garland edition, the text approved by the ModernLanguage Association. The text is fully annotated and is accompanied byall of the author's original illustrations as well as a textualappendix.
