Robin Rhode: Variants is an illustrated exhibition catalogue published to accompany the 2011 Variants exhibition at White Cube, London. The book documents the South African artist Robin Rhodeâ?Ts exploration of performance, photography, animation and drawing, capturing the works shown in the exhibition with high-quality reproductions and texts. Essays, typically including one by critic Skye Sherwin, provide insight into Rhodeâ?Ts creative process and the conceptual frameworks behind the works, especially his playful re-interpretation of everyday objects (such as Rietveld chairs) and his blending of street culture with modernist motifs. The catalogue situates the exhibition within Rhodeâ?Ts broader artistic practice and contemporary visual arts discourse.

The South African born artist is best known for his multi-panel works that deftly combine photography, performance, wall painting, and drawing. Negotiating the urban landscape, these photographs often depict silhouetted figures interacting with carefully composed wall paintings that the artist paints in public spaces, most often in the city of Johannesburg. In each succession of photographs, the choreographed movements of the individual or group appear to alter the two-dimensional renderings, compressing space and time and morphing the urban landscape into a fictional storyboard. Using the medium of photography to capture his painted and performative actions, Rhode disrupts the fixity of the wall, rendering it a mobile substrate that can be transported into a variety of contexts. Colour reproductions throughout.
