Signed by the Author. Octavo, green boards (hardcover), gilt lettering, 182 pp. Very Good, with light foxing (age darkened spotting) and lightly rubbed edges. Contents: Preface; Family History; Childhood Days (1912-1930); Hunting and Fishing; College Days (1931-1937); Doyle and Alma; First Job (1937) and First Campaign (1940); Brevard County Judge (1941-54); Circuit Judge (1954-68); Florida Supreme Court Justice (!969-74); William E. Falck's Recollections; Index. From Preface: Dear Grandchildren, Your Granddaddy, Vassar Benjamin Carlton, has entertained me during the years of our marriage with stories of his years in politics and on the bench. These are stories you should know, too, because he and his family are a part of Florida history. We started making notes in 1980 about his life life and things that happened to him. Sometimes he talked into a tape recorder or wrote notes from memory. He also dictated stories to me. We didn't do any extensive research, but I am sure if you searched the court records you will find proof of the courtroom stories. His career of over 33 years on the bench, as county judge, circuit judge, and finally as chief justice of the Florida State Supreme Court, spanned the years when Florida developed from a sleepy small-town state to a bustling, busy, fast-growing state where everybody wants to live. This is not meant to be a history book, but I have described some of your ancestors to give you a better understanding of what life was like in the old days. Florida, Floridiana, Florida History, Family History, Island Grove, Gainesville, Ocala, Citra, Alachua County, Cross Creek yslic.

Archive of presidential correspondence, 1912-1954, documenting the administrative, professional, and personal roles of women leading American colleges during a period of expanding opportunities for women in higher education. The letters, written on institutional letterhead and signed by female presidents of Vassar College, North Texas Female College, and Florida State College for Women, provide direct evidence of governance practices within women's colleges, including faculty appointments, institutional decision-making, and ceremonial matters such as approval of official college materials. The correspondence reflects the emergence of women in senior academic leadership positions in institutions founded in the nineteenth century to provide advanced education for women excluded from most universities. These documents also illustrate professional networks and mentorship structures that supported the advancement of women within academia, as well as the dual public and private roles these administrators occupied. Archive of five autograph and typed letters signed, dated between 1912 and 1954, on official college letterhead, measuring approximately 6 x 8 inches to 8.5 x 11 inches. Included is a 1912 letter from L.A. Kidd-Key of North Texas Female College discussing faculty appointment terms and candidate selection, noting multiple applicants for a position and requesting confirmation of acceptance. A 1954 letter from Sarah Gibson Blanding of Vassar College, addressed to a Mr. Saltfords, combines personal reflection with professional obligations, referencing travel to a meeting in Atlantic City alongside acknowledgment of a birthday gift. Additional letters document routine administrative and institutional communication across the three colleges. One letter retains its original postmarked envelope. Five letters with minor wear consistent with handling, including a rust stain from a paper clip on one example not affecting text; overall very good condition. A concise documentary group illustrating the development of women's leadership in American higher education and the administrative responsibilities shaping women's colleges in the twentieth century. Signed.

Oblong photo album of wintry scenes at Vassar College, compiled by student Katharine Smith, mid-1930s. Album: 55 leaves / 110 pages, black paper; one leaf detached, else good with some chipping to outer and lower edges of a few leaves. Thin pine-green covers fully intact and attached; lace binding sound. Minor staining and general age-toning to front cover; corners with light wear. The final page is blank. Contents: 109 black-and-white photographs, all landscape format, each approx. 3 13/16" × 5 7/16" including borders, one photograph per page, all neatly mounted and present. Captions in white ink in a careful student hand; Katharine Smith has signed the inside front cover. Smith keeps her lens firmly on campus rather than town, concentrating on the main quad and the college's key buildings in winter snow: Taylor Hall; Thompson Library; Rockefeller, Josselyn, Kendrick, Skinner, Main, Strong, Davison, Ely, Cushing, Kenyon, Blodgett, as well as the Chapel and the President's residence. Equally sensitive to the landscape, she photographs trees, paths, hills, and nearby water under snow, recording how the built environment and grounds interact in winter light. The final third of the album shifts to portraits of fellow coeds and instructors. While only a handful are identified by both given name and surname, those few are researchable in online obituaries and class notes, offering an entrée into Vassar alumnae lives in the mid-20th century and adding genealogical/biographical interest. A visually cohesive, atmospheric record of a women's college campus in winter between the wars, with strong architectural and landscape views and a good sense of student community.
