Although the title states 1928, the colophon dates this to March 1931 and says that the date of 1928 was the Oxford University publication. Barcham Green & Co paper. Top edge gilt - remaining edges rough cut. The dust wrapper is clean, with a littl…e darkening to the spine. A couple of spots, and a tear to the front fold. Loss of about 1 inch to the base of the wrapper. Now covered in archival acetate. The boards are clean and tidy, with a touch of darkening to the base of the spine (where the wrapper is missing) only. Overall a good copy. XXXI pp (introduction)-338 pp. 270 x 185 mm (10¾ x 7¼ inches).

First Edition. 8vo, pp.190, [2 (advertisements)]; a fine copy in contemporary speckled sheep, spine gilt, red morocco label, edges stained yellow; bookplate of the Australian actor Barry Humphries (19342023), in a folding leather box by Trevor Lloyd.Extremely rare, the only traced copy, of a reissue of the sheets of the first Pa…ris edition with a provincially printed cancel title adding to the imprint the imprimeur-libraire Pierre Jean Baptiste Guimbert, of Châtellerault. This is the rarest piece of Beckfordiana we have ever encountered, virtually unknown. The dukedom of Châtellerault, a small town in Nouvelle-Aquitaine, had been granted in 1548 to James Hamilton, second Earl of Arran (15191575), for his role in arranging the marriage of Mary, Queen of Scots, to Francis, Dauphin of France, a title revoked by the French crown in 1559 but still contested and eventually regained by the Hamiltons in 1864. William Beckford's mother Maria (née Hamilton) was a remote descendant of the Hamilton who was duke of Châtellerault, and Beckford's pride in Hamilton descent led him to adopt the Hamilton cinquefoil as his device, and to encourage the marriage of his daughter to the tenth Duke. Despite the historical distance, memory of a Hamilton association with Châtellerault must have lingered among the local populace (there is still a Rue d'Hamilton). The immense scarcity of this Châtellerault issue of Vathek has meant that it has received no critical notice, but it can only be assumed that Guimbert purchased a small number of copies of Poinçot's edition for reissue as an item of local interest. Not in Library Hub, OCLC, or CCFr; not listed among Guimbert's books in Bibliographie poitevine. Chapman & Hodgkin 3(B)(ii,b), known only from an unspecified French bookseller's catalogue. Première édition française entièrement révisée par l'auteur, à la seule adresse de Poinçot à Paris.Écrit en français vers 1782, Vathek parut d…'abord sans nom d'auteur dans une traduction anglaise de Samuel Henley contre la volonté de Beckford. Elle était donnée comme une traduction de l'arabe. Aussi l'auteur s'empressa-t-il de publier le texte original qui parut à Lausanne en 1787.« C'est lorsqu'il découvre la publication de l'édition anglaise de son Vathek que Beckford décide de faire paraître au plus tôt une édition française - celle de Lausanne - qui sera publiée en décembre 1786, mais portant la date de 1787. L'édition est certainement revue par Jean David Paul Etienne Levade (1750 - 1834), professeur de théologie, traducteur, ami et secrétaire des riches anglais. Mais quelle est la version que Levade corrige ? Beckford devait avoir amené avec soi une version précédente à celle utilisée par Henley, ce qui pourrait justifier aussi l'emploi, de la part de Beckford, de la publication de Henley pour réviser l'édition de Lausanne en vue de l'édition de Paris, au mois de juin 1787. L'édition de Paris sera supervisée par François Verdeil, le médecin de Beckford qui l'accompagnait dans ses voyages, et, peut-être par Sébastien Mercier ».Le texte de l'édition Poinçot est très distinct de l'originale de Lausanne et l'on crut longtemps à une traduction maladroite ; les notes imprimées à la suite du texte (pp. 167-190) sont de Samuel Henley, très vraisemblablement traduites par Beckford lui-même.Provenance : bibliothèque des princes de Starhemberg au château d'Eferding, en Autriche, avec cachet.
