Condition: Good. - Folio, 13-3/4 inches high by 11-1/4 inches wide. Over 250 words penned on heavy creamy white vellum listing the ingredients and outlining the dosage and prescribed use for George Smith's "Anti-Dyspeptic Pills". Likely meant to accompany the actual patent application or "Letters Patent", the document asserts that this is "The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent, and making part of the same, containing a description in the words of the said George Smith himself of his improvement in Medicine entitled 'Anti Dyspeptic Pills'." George Smith then proceeds to list the ingredients with quantities measured in drachms, grains and scruple, with the exception of the syrup of liquorice for which he recommends using a "sufficient quantity to make the whole into a mass for pills." The ingredients appear to consist of aloes, gamboge, rhubarb, charcoal, gum myrrh, and Oil of carui (i.e. caraway) which are to be mixed with the syrup of liquorice, the whole to be divided into pills of five grains each. Smith then elaborates, describing dosage and the desired results. Signed in full by George Smith at bottom right, with the signatures of two witnesses, Oliver Hull and Gabriel Winter, penned at bottom left. The document is stained & browned along the edges with some spotting or foxing throughout. Folded once horizontally and twice vertically. Good. The original patent to which George Smith refers in this document was sold at auction in 1998 and is now in the collection of The Gilder Lehrman Institute of American History.

Addressed to Delalande, "Surintendant de la musique de la chambre du Roy et de la musique de la chambre de sa Majesté, et Compositeur de la musique de sa chambre." Lalande acknowledges receipt of wages for October-December, 1696 With small oval duty handstamp to head of royal device with "quittance" to left of device, "Six Sols" to right. Slightly worn and soiled; several very small holes. "In 1683, when the sous-maîtres Du Mont and Robert retired from the royal chapel, the king ordered a competition to replace them; 35 musicians took part (among them Charpentier, Desmarets, Lorenzani and Nivers). This number was narrowed to 15, who were all obliged to set the text of Psalm xxxii, Beati quorum; on the basis of these compositions (only Lalande's survives), four were chosen to share the responsibilities by quarters: Coupillet (January), Collasse (April), Minoret (July) and Lalande (October). According to the 'Discours', Louis XIV himself intervened to assure the quarter for Lalande, initiating his rise as a favoured court composer. A little over a year later, in January 1685, he was appointed compositeur de la musique de la chambre, sharing half the year with Collasse, the other half being controlled by Pierre Robert. In January 1689, aged 31, he became a surintendant de la musique de la chambre, the most coveted musical post at court." A fine example from "the leading composer of the high Baroque grand motet at the French Court." James R. Anthony, revised by Lionel Sawkins in Grove Music Online. Signed.

Addressed to Lully as "Compositeur de la Musique de la Chambre du Roi." Large oblong octavo (179 x 240 mm.). Lully acknowledges receipt of wages in cash the amount of one and fifty livres, his salary for the preceding quarter (July-September) of the current year. Dated 17 October 1676 at conclusion and signed in full, "Jean Baptiste Lully." With small oval duty handstamp to head of royal device surrounded by the words "Generalité de Paris," with "Quittance" to left of device, "Cinq Sols" to right. Vellum very slightly browned; some creasing; two small holes, just touching the word "cent" and the descender on the "p" of Lully's signature. "Lully, regarded throughout Enlightenment Europe as the leading figure in French music, created a style which was truly his own, drawing on many sources which he was probably better able to assimilate than anyone else in his time. The language he forged, and to which he sometimes brought exceptional breadth, could leave no one indifferent, and it still attracts audiences today with its power, clarity, equilibrium, coherence, poetry and exquisite sensitivity." Jérôme de la Gorce in Grove Music Online As none of Lully's musical autograph manuscripts have survived, documents such as this, dating from his important ballets de cour period, are among the only examples of his hand extant. A fine example from a leading 17th century composer, regarded as the creator of the French Baroque tradition in opera and ballet. Signed.
