Cloth. Condition: Very Good. Dust Jacket Condition: None Issued. 1st Edition. Bound in cloth covered boards--the aforementioned cloth is fraying a bit, and seems ill-chosen for the work at hand, depicting, as it does, some European villa and sundry patterned flowers. The interior is very bright, with all lithographs present. Owner's name and appealingly weird insignia to front end paper.

Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. Verve was a lavish, French art and literary quarterly magazine, published in Paris, France. It was known for its high-quality reproductions of artwork and contributions from prominent artists and writers. The reproductions of artwork contained within would use techniques like heliogravure in color and black and white, as well as lithography. E. Teriade, the magazine's director, envisioned this publication would present the work of the artists and writers in the most perfect way possible. While it featured both French and English editions, this set of three issues bound in one are in English. Bound in burnt dark orange publisher's cloth, the cover bears the magazine's title, "Verve" in metallic silver at the bottom corner of the cover and along the spine. The three issues bound together in this one book are Volume 1, No. 2, March-June of 1938; Vol. 1, No. 3, October-December of 1938; and Vol. 1, No. 4, January-March, 1939. Profusely illustrated with artwork by many artists in black and white, including actual lithographs, bound in. The value in this book is completely in the lithographs themselves. FURTHER DETAIL OF CONTENTS:Spring 1938 (March-June). Volume One, Number Two. Includes all lithographs: "The Twelve Mansions of Heaven", and "The Heavenly Bodies" (Stars and Comets by Kandinsky; and The Sun and The Moon by Andre Masson). No. 3 (October-December, [1938]). Volume One, Number Three. Includes all lithographs: "The Indian Pantheon" (Birth of Vishnu; Saint at Prayer; Death of Bali; Demons of Ceylon; Planetary Divinities of Ceylon; and Playful Divinities), and "The Four Seasons" (Spring by Marc Chagall; Summer by Joan Miro; Autumn by Rattner; and Winter by Paul Klee). No. 4 (January-March, 1939). Volume One, Number Four. Includes all lithographs: "Tacuinum Sanitatis, Fourteenth Century Book of Health, Italian School, (Rye, Gourds, Sage, Veal, Clothes, Millet, Dill, New Wine); "The Dance" by Henri Matisse; and "The Garden of Allah" by Andre Derain.CONDITION: External cover shows wear and scratching, particularly along the edges. Inside, the cover of Volume One, Number Two has a 1/2 inch closed tear at the foot near the gutter. Leaves have lightly toned, yet are completely unmarked. Lithographs are bold and magnificent, all of which are present. Hinges are strong and the binding is sound. A solid copy containing three issues in one. PLEASE NOTE: Due to the size and weight of this book, an additional shipping charge may apply and will be requested after purchase. This copy will arrive with "signature required" upon delivery. Paperback. Condition: FINE. First Edition. Complete run of the first four issues of Teriade's legendary art magazine. Beginning with a stunning cover produced by Matisse for the first issue, Verve would incorporate fresh artwork into its cover designed, newly commissioned by artists such as Miro, Picasso, Chagall, and other leading lights of the French art world. Each issue offered spectacular color lithographs printed by the Paris lithographers, Mourlot. Early issues came in litho-printed card wrappers in boxes, later volumes would be in paper-over board with litho covers. This choce allowed Teriade to feature the fresh lithographic artwork in the cover design, but left the books themselves extremely fragile and succeptible to wear. Additionally, the full-page lithographs have been continuous targets for art dealers looking to excise the plates. So condition seen here is quite rare, with each volume preserved COMPLETE + FINE with no signs of the wear and toning so commonly seen. 'The cover of Verve No. 1 is by Henri Matisse; it consists of three unmodulated colors--red, blue, and black--that the master cut directly from printers' ink specimen books. . Mattisse's cover for the first issue, lithographed by Fernand Mourlot printers, was an original work of art created expressly for the magazine--as would be practically all of the Verve's covers. . The painter took great pains to make sure that the cover would turn out exactly as he wished. . THe care Matisse lavished on what others might consider a minor undertaking was one of the hallmarks of Teriade's publications. How did he induce the greatest artists of this century to give the very best of themelves? . Matisse and Teriade shared a common ideal. For both of them, painting was life itself.' (Michel Antonioz, VERVE: The Ultimate Review of Art and Literature, 35-36).

Paris: 4 Rue Ferou (6e). December 1937-March 1939. Four volumes, folio (355 x 260 mm). Original wraparound colour-illustrated card wrappers, housed in a custom pale blue cloth slipcase lined with marbled paper and a chemise in quarter blue cloth with marbled sides; vol. I, pp. 112, [113-128]; vol. II, pp. 128; vol. III, pp. 132; vol. IV, pp. 140; heliogravure, colour process, and lithographed plates included in pagination; light rubbing to spine tips, extremities, and folds, tears with associated creasing to margins of vol. III, pp. 19-26; overall a bright, clean, very good set; prospectus/order form loosely inserted to vol. I.Sharp, bright copies of the first four English-language issues of one of the high points of twentieth-century periodical publishing, featuring work by many of the greatest artists and writers of the age.Like The Yellow Book (1894-1897), La Revue Blanche (1889-1903), and Blast (1914-1915), Teriade's Parisian Verve review captured the spirit of its moment. The prefatory statement in the first issue boldly declares:'VERVE proposes to present art as intimately mingled with the life of each period and to furnish testimony of the participation by artists in the essential events of their time. It is devoted to artistic creation in all fields and in all forms. [.] It will present documents as they are, without any arrangement which might detract from their naturalness. The value of its elements will depend on their character, the selection of them that has been made and the significance they assume through their disposition in the magazine. That the illustrations may retain the import of the originals, VERVE will utilize the technical methods best suited to each reproduction. It will call on the best specialists of heliogravure in colors and in black and white, as well as of typography, and will not disdain to employ the forgotten process of lithography. The luxuriousness of VERVE will consist in the publication of documents as fully and as perfectly as possible.'These first four issues each bear striking wraparound colour covers by Matisse, Braque, Bonnard, and Rouault respectively, signalling the remarkable range of art and literature within. A brief glance at the contents pages reveals an extraordinary roll call of the greatest artists and writers at work during the early decades of the century: the first issue alone includes writing by Gide, Bataille, Dos Passos, Lorca, Malraux, and Michaux, alongside fine reproductions of paintings by Watteau, Corot, Delacroix, and Courbet, as well as recent work by Matisse, Derain, Bonnard, and Maillol; subsequent issues feature writing by Hemingway, Joyce, Sartre, and many others. First published in December 1937, Verve survived in various forms until 1960. These notably bright copies of the first four issues support John Russell's description of the journal 's[inging] out from the other side of the street in a way that made us run across the road to look [.] more closely.'See Russell, 'Flair for the Grand Gesture: Celebrating a Magazine', New York Times (1988).
