Paperback. Condition: New. Print on Demand. This book delves into the historical debate surrounding the free trade and colonization of India during the 19th century. The author draws upon archival research and statistical data to challenge the claims of those who opposed free trade and colonization in India. They argue that these policies, rather than benefiting India, stifled its economic growth, stunted its industries, and perpetuated poverty. The author's insights are particularly significant in light of ongoing discussions about the legacy of colonialism and the role of free trade in promoting economic development. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format. Add to basketInscribed to Robert Hyde Greg Esq (1795-1875), from the Manchester Chamber of Commerce. He was a noted industrialist, his family's textile being one of the first of the Industrial revolution, and a staunch believer in free trade principles. Pamphlet by John Crawfurd (1783-1868), a noted Diplomat who led embassies to both Siam and Burma and was the last Resident of Singapore. He was a lifelong believer in free trade and in this pamphlet laid out his arguments for the abolition of monopolies. He particularly focusses on the idea that the enterprise of individuals would reap more trade than a larger planned model, and would become a key parliamentary figure in the eventual abolition of the monopoly in the Act of 1833. It was later known that he was being paid £1500 a year by Calcutta merchants to lobby on behalf of their interests. Second edition, enlarged; 8vo (22 x 13.5 cm); inscribed to half-title, later quarter green morocco, green cloth boards, gilt lettering to spine, a little rubbed, a very good copy; [iv], 106 pp.…
