Add to basketPaperback. Condition: New. Print on Demand. This book incites a debate about the sovereignty of territories and their right to autonomy, specifically in the context of slavery. Mr. Douglas proposed states should have complete control over their politics and policies, but Northern territories led by President Buchanan and the Supreme Court, advocated for federal oversight to protect the rights of blacks. This created a divide between those who believed the Constitution prohibited slavery in territories, and those who argued it was permissible and should be up to individual states. The author countered that both arguments were off base as the Constitution neither prohibited nor permitted slavery in territories, leaving it to federal policy to decide. The book uses the slavery debate to explore the nuances of federalism and the limits of states' rights, offering insights into the complex relationship between national unity and local self-determination. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format. In rare cases, an imperfection in the original, such as a blemish or missing page, may be replicated in the book. print-on-demand item.

Wraps. Condition: Very good. Second edition of Observations on Senator Douglas's Views of Popular Sovereignty, as Expressed in Harpers' Magazine, for September, 1859. (illustrator). Second Edition. Octavo, 24pp. Stated "second edition" on title page. Original wraps, bound at spine with twine. Light toning to cover, generally clean text. (Sabin 20693) This followed the first edition the same year. Stephen A. Douglas (1813-1861) was a Democratic senator from Illinois, who ran against Lincoln in 1858 for the Senate seat from Illinois. Their eloquent debates, which would be published in 1860 as the Lincoln-Douglas Debates would help launch the presidential candidacy of Lincoln against Douglas in 1860. During his time in the Senate, Douglas advocated for the principle of popular sovereignty, which allowed new western territories to decide for themselves if slavery would be permitted within their borders. In 1850, he advocated for the Compromise of 1850, which aimed to keep an equal number of slave and non-slave holding states. In 1854, he passed the Kansas-Nebraska Act, which repealed the Missouri Compromise of 1820, created the new territories of Kansas and Nebraska, and followed his principle of popular sovereignty, which allowed the new territories to decide for themselves if they wished to hold slaves. It had the opposite effect on the nation, stoking tensions in the north and solidifying the Republican party as the antislavery party. In the election of 1860, the Democratic party split between his candidacy and John C. Breckinridge of Kentucky. As the Civil War broke out, Douglas rallied support for the Union, but he died in 1861.
