Hardcover. Condition: Good. First Edition. Volume I: TEXT: xii, 339 pp., [1], errata slip, index, includes a Chronological Summary of the History and Events of Jerusalem / Volume II: PLATES: 63 lithographed plates of which 7 are folding, after drawings & photographs by Pierotti, many tinted, complete and collated, translated by Thomas George Bonney, titles printed in red & black, original half morocco, gilt title on spine, gilt upper edges, covers of different colour, volume 1 in blue cloth & volume 2 in green, plate I professionally repaired on the first lower and upper fold, damp stain affecting lower spine of Volume II, seeping to most of the plates, heavier on the first 10 plates then getting lighter towards latter part of the volume, cloth covers faded and slightly soiled at lower spine, Volume II professionally rebound, generally set in good condition otherwise. MAJOR PICTORIAL DOCUMENT ON JERUSALEM IN THE 19th CENTURY. Pierotti was a Sardinian army engineer officer who worked as an architect from the early 1850s in the Austrian Hospice and the Church of St. Anne in Jerusalem. During his work there just before the Crimean War, the Pasha of Jerusalem requested him to attempt to repair Jerusalem's water supply, which put Pierotti in a unique position. He had full access to all areas of Jerusalem, and full access to the Al-Aqsa Mosque. He could thus enter, dig, sketch, and photograph parts of the Mosque; for the first time a Westerner had ever had the chance for this rare opportunity. During the late 1850s and 1860s he worked with French scholars, in particular Félicien de Saulcy, and developed an interest in current archaeological and antiquarian matters. In 1864 he published this work which he dedicated to the Emperor of France, Napoleon III. He refuted the ideas of the British scholar Ferguson in his work Holy City. Accordingly a cry of plagiarism went up; British scholarship was under threat posed by France, and British Holy Land interests were at risk from those of the French government. Pierotti's photographs of Jerusalem are considered to be amongst the earliest. The second volume of this book contains lithographs made after some thirty photographs, drawings, and maps. He did not limit his interest to architecture only; in 1864 he published a study in ethnography entitled Customs and Traditions of Palestine. Bibliographic references: Moscrop: Measuring Jerusalem p. 63-64; Blackmer 1309; Tobler p. 189. #29757.

Ermete Pierotti was a Sardinian engineer and archaeologist who had come to Jerusalem in 1854 and was involved in several restoration and building projects before being appointed chief engineer of Jerusalem by the Ottoman governor of the city. This gave him full access to all areas of Jerusalem, and the 1864 'Jerusalem Explored' represents the culmination of his years of archaeological, historical, and topographical research. Although met with controversy on its publication in Britain, as Pierotti's conclusions on the site of the Holy Sepulchre disproved (correctly) those of the gentleman archaeologist James Fergusson, Pierotti's work stands as a valuable record of 19th-century Jerusalem, enabled by Pierotti's remarkable level of access to all parts of the city. (3 1/4 x 5 3/4" for "Jerusalem"). Unpaginated. Original brown and tan printed wrappers. A collection of four magnificent fold-out panoramic views of Jerusalem finely reproduced in photogravure. All booklets were produced for tourists in the 1930s by the Benedictine community of the Dormition Abbey. - The first booklet shows a northeast view of the Holy City. When unfolded, the view measures 100" (8.33 feet). - The second booklet shows a southern view of Jerusalem. When unfolded, the view measures 90" (7.5 feet). - The third and four booklets are essentially two different sizes of the same view from East Jerusalem (Mount of Olives), looking northwest towards the Old City, prominently showing the Al-Aqsa mosque and the Dome of the Rock in the foreground. The smaller booklet contains a key at the right for reference, listing 40 different sites that have been labeled in the panorama. The larger booklet of the same view is not labeled. When unfolded the the views measure 22 1/4" (almost 2 feet) and 49" (more than 4 feet) for the smaller and larger booklets respectively. The larger of the "Jerusalem" books has some water staining to the top left corner of the front wrapper, and a small abrasion at the very top of the second panel, resulting in minor image loss. Images all clean and bright otherwise. Other booklets with minor shelf wear to wrappers, otherwise in very good condition.

First and only edition of this superb suite of architectural studies from Isaacs' pioneering photography in the region, finely reproduced by Day & Sons. Isaacs made an extensive tour of Palestine in 1856-7, and this was also the subject of his two books: The Dead Sea (1857) and A Pictorial Tour in the Holy Land (1863). Copies are scarce, with WorldCat recording those at Museum of Islamic Art (Qatar), V&A, and University of Glasgow only; we have traced only two appearances at auction. The portfolio contains two images each of the Dome of the Rock - "General View of the Great Mosque of the Sakara" and "The Mosque of the Sakara and the Judgement-Seat of David" - and of the Al-Aqsa Mosque - "Facade of the Mosque El Aksa" and "The Marble Pulpit and Colonnades". Isaacs had in fact been pre-empted in recording these sites by Joseph-Philibert Girault de Prangey (1804-92), who made daguerreotypes in Jerusalem in 1844, but which were unknown until the 1920s when they were discovered in a storeroom on his estate. Albert Augustus Isaacs (1826-1903) was born in Berry Hill, Jamaica, the son of a coffee planter, and was educated at Corpus Christi, Cambridge, receiving a BA in 1851 and an MA in 1854. He then taught at Christ Church, Oxford, and worked as a priest in Peterborough (1850-66) before serving as vicar of Christ Church, Leicester, until 1891. He was noted for his missionary work among the Jewish community. His first visit to Palestine was made around the same time that he took up an interest in photography: "as he explained in his 1857 travelogue, 'We well know how often the pencil is proved to be treacherous and deceptive; while on the other hand the facsimile of the scene must be given by the aid of the photograph. This consideration induced me to determine that. I would visit these places, and not only judge for myself, but endeavour likewise to give the public the best means of arriving at a just conclusion'. Isaacs did most of his work with waxed-paper negatives, well suited to the hot climate and extended travels that he faced. At some point, the reverend himself underwent a sort of conversion. As Isaacs recalled late in life in a letter to John Ruskin: 'I can speak of this authoritatively, having been the first person (1856) to take any photographs of importance in the Holy Land - and indeed the first who had taken any by the then new and beautiful collodion process'" (approved biography, Metropolitan Museum of Art). Folio (506 x 344 mm). 4 two-tint lithographs. Printed pale greenish yellow card wrappers, spine and rear panel replaced. Front panel of wrappers slightly rubbed and soiled, some short edge-splits; the plates with light surface soiling, minor edge-splits and chips as often, now professionally restored, overall very good.

Hardcover. Condition: Good. Ewald, Mrs; Simpson, W (illustrator). 1st Edition. A collection of seven plate illustrations of Jerusalem and the Holy Land and regional costumes, after drawings made on the spot by Mrs Ewald (possibly the wife of the missionary F C Ewald, although this is uncertain). Other sources suggest that the full collection included 12 plates, but we know of at least two other copies with just seven plates (although the selection here differs). The plates are: 1. Jerusalem from the North West, 2. Costume and Likeness of a Native Jew and Jewess of Jerusalem, 3. Bethlehem and Rachel's Tomb, 4. Costume and Likeness of Wandering Arabs from the Plains of Jerusalem, 5. Hebron and Machpelah, 6. Costume and Likeness of the Present Samaritan Priest, Rabbi Amram and his Family at Nablous, the Ancient Sychar, and 7. First View of Jerusalem from the Mount of Olives Coming From Bethany. The four landscape plates were engraved by W Simpson, a leading engraver of the time; and the three costume plates are hand-coloured; all seven lithographed by Day and Son, lithographers to Queen Victoria. Bound in green cloth covered boards, blind ruled with gilt titles, chalk glazed endpapers, titles etc pencilled on verso of front free endpaper (no title page), all plates tissue-guarded. (Boards worn and a little marked, rubbed at edges and worn through on rounded corners, previous owner's name on front paste down, foxed throughout, especially on reverse of plates, but not affecting images, tissue guards are fragile, tanned and creased. Oblong 4to. Scarce.
