Thereafter, he became San Francisco's first Chief of Police, retiring in 1858. As a Major, he joined the volunteer campaign against the Paiutes in Nevada in 1860. In the Civil War, he served in various campaigns along the Pacific Coast, and was discharged as a Brigadier General in 1866. Thereafter, he was involved in Idaho railroads and was elected Idaho's Secretary of State in 1892. He returned to Boston in 1896, where he died in 1914 at the age of 88.
