Like most of O'Connor's stories, the novel is filled with Catholic themes and dark images, making it a classic example of Southern Gothic literature. This copy is a 1st trade edition, 1st printing of the work published by Farrar, Straus & Cudahy. in 1960. The dust jacket is protected from further wear by a Mylar sleeve. **************************************************************************** ******************************** "A haunting exploration of faith, family, and the struggle between the sacred and the profane. First published in 1955, The Violent Bear It Away is a landmark in American literature. This dark and absorbing novel showcases Flannery O'Connor's Gothic sensibility and bracing satirical voice. It follows the orphaned Francis Marion Tarwater and his cousins, the schoolteacher Rayber, as they defy the prophecy of their dead uncle?that Tarwater will become a prophet and baptize Rayber's young son, Bishop. Tarwater fights an internal battle against his innate faith and the voices calling him to be a prophet, while Rayber tries to draw Tarwater into a more "reasonable" modern world. Both wrestle with the legacy of their dead relatives and lay claim to Bishop's soul. O'Connor observes this struggle with an astonishing combination of irony and compassion, humor and pathos, revealing her brilliance as an innovative writer acutely attuned to the interplay of the sacred and the mundane." /////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////// Mary Flannery O'Connor (March 25, 1925 - August 3, 1964) was an American novelist, short story writer and essayist. She wrote two novels and 31 short stories, as well as a number of reviews and commentaries. She was a Southern writer who often wrote in a sardonic Southern Gothic style and relied heavily on regional settings and grotesque characters, often in violent situations. The unsentimental acceptance or rejection of the limitations or imperfections or differences of these characters (whether attributed to disability, race, crime, religion or sanity) typically underpins the drama. Her writing reflected her Roman Catholic faith and frequently examined questions of Catholicism-defined morality and ethics. Her posthumously compiled Complete Stories won the 1972 U.S. National Book Award for Fiction and has been the subject of enduring praise. The first chapter was originally published as the story "You Can't Be Any Poorer Than Dead" in the journal New World Writing. The novel tells the story of Francis Marion Tarwater, a fourteen-year-old boy who is trying to escape the destiny his uncle has prescribed for him: the life of a prophet. Like most of O'Connor's stories, the novel is filled with Catholic themes and dark images, making it a classic example of Southern Gothic literature. Flannery O'Connor was a devout Catholic, and The Violent Bear It Away reflects her religious beliefs. It is filled with religious imagery and themes, ranging from the power of passion to the dominance of destiny.".

The author's third book and second novel, published the same year as the first American edition. Only 3,500 copies were printed of the UK first edition, and it is consequently harder to find now than the US first edition. ***Very good in orange cloth-covered boards with gilt titles to the spine. The boards are clean and unmarked. Head and tail of spine slightly rubbed and creased. Bottom corner of front board slightly creased. Top edge and fore-edge of page block slightly foxed and discoloured. No reading lean to the binding. Spine tight. Internally also very good with no inscriptions. Pages clean. No creases or tears. ***In a very good colour-illustrated dustwrapper, which has not been price-clipped, retaining the original publisher's printed price of 16/- net. The dustwrapper is complete without any chips or tears - just a short closed tear to the top edge of the back panel. Head of spine of dustwrapper very slightly rubbed and creased. Back panel of dustwrapper slightly rubbed and discoloured (being a plain white background). Slight fading to the colours on the spine of the dustwrapper. Dustwrapper bright. ***206mm x 136mm. 243 pages. ***'Flannery O'Connor is one of the most brilliant of young American writers; she is already well-known for her first novel, Wise Blood, and her collected short stories, The Artificial Nigger. This, her third book, is a novel. It is powerful, strange and thought-provoking, the work of a talented and original writer. ---we are shown how the boy's great-uncle who considers himself a prophet, has sought and failed to imbue his nephew, a schoolteacher, with the spirit of religious exaltation and violent dedication. When the old man dies, Tarwater, whom he has brought up in the backwoods and taught to expect the Lord's call, is left to decide whether he will be a prophet like the old man, or whether, like the schoolteacher, he will act only on his own rational interests. ---After getting drunk and failing to bury his great-uncle, Tarwater, uncertain of his mission but hating the thought of it, heads for the city where the schoolteacher lives. ***The main action of the book concerns his struggle with himself to decide his vocation and the schoolteacher's struggle to save himself from the old man's influence. Tarwater's real mentor is an articulate devil who phrases the schoolteacher's philosophy in the boy's own religious idiom. In the end it is an experience with the devil which crystalises for the boy his true vocation. This is a novel in which the humorous elements do not interfere with the seriousness of the theme. It is a powerful study, coolly observed and ruthlessly described.' (Quote from dustwrapper blurb) ***First impression of the first UK edition - extremely hard to find now in the original dustwrapper in collectable condition. Of interest to collectors of American South grotesque and gothic literary first editions, and in particular the work of Flannery O'Connor. ***For all our books, postage is charged at cost, allowing for packaging: any shipping rates indicated on ABE are an average only: we will reduce the P & P charge where appropriate - please contact us for postal rates for heavier books and sets etc.

On January 28, 1960, soon after she had received the book, Flannery O'Connor wrote to author Cecil Dawkins that "The worst misprint was actually on the next to the last page. It is supposed to be 'he heard the command,' and they have it, he heard to command," which doesn't make sense." ? O'Connor was so displeased with the error, It is purported that occasionally, when O'Connor signed copies of this book, she would turn to this page and make the correction herself. Condition: Very good plus. First printing. First Greek edition of O'Connor's second and final novel, translated by major postwar Greek novelist, critic, and journalist Alexandros Kotzias. While still writing THE VIOLENT BEAR IT AWAY, O'Connor referred to the novel as her "Opus Nauseous"; by the time the manuscript was complete, she was left "in that state of not knowing whether it works or is the worst novel ever written." To the novelist John Hawkes, she wrote, "I don't think many people will like it, but it will mean something to me if a few people do," and upon correcting the proofs, "await[ed] the critical reception with distaste and unanticipation." In fact, the top end of critical reception was (and is) hugely favorable, but O'Connor was able to console herself with the strong suspicion that those who praised it did not understand it. O'Connor was favored with a translator strikingly well-matched in sensibility: the heroes of Kotzias's own novels "are often outcasts, underdogs, down-and-outs, social misfits. Their language is the language of terror, betrayal, sexual violence, physical or psychological abuse" (Moschos). Scarce; OCLC locates just two holdings. 7.75'' x 5''.
