Hardcover book bound in the publisher's original full cloth-gilt. 24 cm. 423 pages. Contains black-and-white illustrations throughout. This copy contains a signed inscription (containing a stanza of verse) by the author Edith M. Thomas, a noted American poet, to the front loose end page. In very good condition. Bookplate affixed to the front loose end page. Additional signed inscription by Mabel G. Dick (of Quakertown, Pennsylvania) to the page opposite the title page. Some interior pages are stained at their extremities. Rear hinge cracked but holding. Moderate edge wear/bumping, mottling, soiling to the cloth covers. Thomas uses the fictional character of Mary to explore the culture, art and cuisine of the Pennsylvania Dutch. The rear of the book (pages 151 to 409) contain recipes. A book featured in Feeding America, an online archive of important and influential American cookbooks from the late 18th to early 20th century from the Michigan State University Libraries collection. Second edition (originally published in 1915).

The recipient was at this time the Principal of the Slade School of Fine Art and was himself the illustrator of a number of books, including one by Walter de la Mare another of whose books was illustrated by Harold Jones. Schwabe had just been appointed to the War Artists' Advisory Committee and given the commission of recording the bomb damage at Canterbury Cathedral.Corners of rear cover slightly bumped, otherwise fine in very good, slightly marked dustwrapper a bit darkened at the spine, with a small chip to head of spine and a 2 cm closed tear.
