Field in collaboration with Wesleyan Students including Jeffrey Deitch in one of his earliest curatorial efforts, who along with fellow students Rosemary Rodgers, Puffin D'Oench, and John Spike wrote additional text. Artists include Albrecht Dürer, Cristofano Robetta, Andrea Mantegna, Marcantonio Raimondi, Rembrandt van Rijn, Francisco de Goya, Edouard Manet, Jean François Millet, Félix Buhot, Théodore Géricault, Anders Zorn, Rudolphe Bresdin, Eduardo Paolozzi, and Andy Warhol ("Silver and Gold Marilyn" from the Portfolio "Ten Marilyns" was on display). Text only, does not include any illustrations. Good. Moderate rubbing of covers and rubbing of cover edges. On recto the word "prints" has been colored in with yellow ink and the two astericks have been colored in with red ink. James Meller was one of the 8 founding members of Foster Associates in 1967. He was also a graphic designer who worked extensively for the Institute of Contemporary Arts in London. While a student at Oxford he had a group show at the New Vision Gallery with Tim Wallis, George Coral and Raymond Wilson. Granta the Oxford student magazine had contributions by a number of the Independent Group and their associates, notably John McHale and Ryaner Banham. Warhol's large mural of 1964 was intended to hang on the outside of the Theaterama, a circular cinema 100 feet (30 m) in diameter. Intending to depict "something to do with New York", and taking inspiration from Marcel Duchamp's 1923 work Wanted, $2,000 Reward (in which Duchamp put his own photograph in a wanted poster), Warhol decided to print large-scale copies of images from a booklet published on 1 February 1962 by the New York Police Department, entitled "The Thirteen Most Wanted", showing 22 head-and-shoulder mug shots of the wanted men.…

Condition: Very Good+ poster with light stress marks at the folds and hints of dimpling, machine-folded as issued. The white lines in the photos are the reflection of the flash. VG+. // [Mark] Lancaster has also remembered stretching a series of canvases printed with the faces of the Most Wanted Men in early July. This indicates that Warhol probably produced the series of paintings some time between late April and the end of June, in the aftermath of the mural. Thomas Francis (Duke) Connelly was wanted for robbing $300,000 from Chase Manhattan Bank in Woodside, Queens, New York in 1955. ITEM #2) 1962 NYPD flyer "Spring 3100" featuring gangland figures Jack Bernstein (Burglary and Grand Larceny) Andrew Ferraiola (Murder) and James Surdo (Murder) and is the direct source material behind Andy Warhols collection 13 Most Wanted Men. BIOGRAPHY Andy Warhol's 13 Most Wanted Men series began life as a single composite mural for the 1964 New York World's Fair. Featuring mugshots taken from the 3100 New York Police Department booklet of most wanted men, the mural depicted 22 distinct mugshots, but the title 13 Most Wanted Men refers to the actual number of individuals whose portraits Warhol used. With the original World's Fair mural painted over prior to the event after accusations of bad taste by the Mayor of New York, Warhol was inspired to create a series of halftone silk screened Wanted Men portraits which were exhibited in 1967 at the Leo Castelli gallery in New York then subsequently at Galerie Ileana Sonnabend in Paris and later that year at Cologne's Galerie Rudolf Zwirner. In an interview with Warhol's British born assistant Mark Lancaster, the Yorkshireman recounts Warhol producing the series of prints some time between late April and the end of June, in the aftermath of the mural. In late September 1964, when Warhol joined the Leo Castelli Gallery in New York, eight canvases were recorded in the gallery registry. According to the Castelli registry, Warhol's canvases were consigned to Ileana Sonnabend in May 1966, a year before they were exhibited at her Paris gallery. The catalogue of the Sonnabend exhibition in Paris is not dated, but contemporary reviews place it between February 26 and May 7, 1967. The Sonnabend exhibition traveled to Galerie Rudolf Zwirner, Cologne, where it was on view in September and October of 1967 before traveling to the Rowan Gallery, London, in March 1968. The official SPRING 3100 flyer in this LOT is an official New York Police Department publication. The title comes from the six-digit telephone number for NYPD Headquarters at the time the magazine was founded: SPring 3100. At the time, Police Headquarters was located at 240 Centre Street between Grand and Broome, which was in the geographical area covered by the Spring telephone exchange. When telephone numbers in New York changed to seven digits, in the late 1930s, the telephone number of Police Headquarters became SPring 7-3100, but the magazine retained the old number as its name. The magazine's original format size was 11.5" x 9" changing to 9.5" x 7" in 1955. CONDITION & PROVENANCE This signed poster promotes the 1967 Cologne show and remains in near fine condition, with only lightest creasing and color toning. Previously documented purchased by a British gallery at auction in the US from the signed collection 13 Most Wanted Men. Warhol's pencil signature above the title is approximately 8cm long.
