Add to basketHardcover. Condition: Near Fine. Dust Jacket Condition: Near Fine. Lawrence, John (illustrator). 1st Edition. The First UK printing published by Hutchinson, London in 1996. 8vo., black publisher's boards, lettered in gilt to backstrip with publisher's device to foot; dark green endpapers; together in the illustrated wrapper featuring a wraparound image by John Lawrence; title vignette, and a further three full-page sketches by the same; THE BOOK essentially near Fine; the near Fine WRAPPER just a touch creased at the edges. The wrapper is protected in a removable Brodart archival cover. This copy has been signed by the author in blue biro to the title page, along with a loosely tipped-in photograph the author, additionally signed by Adams, and a notecard inscribed "To James and Sally, with my best wishes, Richard Adams" dated 1st August '06. The long-awaited follow up to 'Watership Down', the author's debut work and a classic work of children's fiction published in 1972. The present title, which followed almost 25 years later, explores some of the folk stories known to the rabbits, as well as the lives of some of the key characters in the original work; Hazel, Fiver, Bigwig and others. Richard Adams was a fervent supporter of animal rights, and as well as his writings, which were dominated by themes of anthropomorphosied animals and naturalism, he served as president of the RSPCA, and was a long-term patron of Animal Aid. His 1977 novel 'The Plague Dogs' described a mongrel and a terrier, who escaped from an animal testing facility, and in some of the present tales, Adams returns to his common theme of the threat of man to animals - here describing wildfires, and a rabbit who 'smells of man'. John Lawrence is a prolific illustrator and wood engraver, who has provided artwork for over 200 books including, most recently, Philip Pullman's 'Lyra's Oxford' and 'One upon a time in the North'. Scarce with these attributes. More images available on request. Ashton Rare Books welcomes direct contact. Signed by Author(s).

Upper cover with gilt rabbit vignette. Spine with five raised bands, gilt vignettes in compartments and gilt titling. Gilt-decorated dentelles. All edges gilt. Marbled endpapers. Tipped-in original watercolour frontispiece by John Lawrence, signed by the artist. Housed in original marbled board slipcase. First illustrated edition. Limited to 250 numbered copies, this being number 127. Richard Adams began telling the story of Hazel, Fiver, and the other rabbits to his two daughters on long car journeys in the early 1970s. When he wrote it down, thirteen publishers rejected it before Rex Collings accepted it in 1972. From that unpromising start, Watership Down became one of the most widely read novels of the second half of the twentieth century. It remains Penguin's best-selling novel of all time, winner of the Carnegie Medal and the Guardian Prize, and a book that continues to find new readers through the generations. This Paradine Press edition of 1976 is the first illustrated edition of the novel, and by far the most distinguished form in which it has been published. John Lawrence, renowned as one of the foremost British illustrators of his generation, contributed colour and black-and-white illustrations throughout. The volume is also fronted by an original watercolour and is signed by Lawrence. The binding was commissioned from Sangorski & Sutcliffe and is a production of exceptional quality by one of the great London binderies. A new foreword by Adams, not published elsewhere, completes the edition. Near fine. Slipcase near fine, some foxing to inner surfaces. Binding near fine, leather supple, gilt bright. Contents fine; some pages with very faint age markings, pages otherwise fresh, edge gilt bright. Illustrated plates beautifully preserved with colours still true. Signed by Author(s).

First American edition of the author's first and most beloved work. Octavo, bound in full morocco by the Harcourt Bindery with gilt titles and tooling to the spine in six compartments within raised gilt bands, gilt ruling to the front and rear panel, gilt inner dentelles stamp-signed by the Harcourt Bindery, marbled endpapers, all edges gilt. Presentation copy, inscribed by the author on a page bound in, "To Charles with the warm good wishes of Richard Adams." In fine condition. Although Watership Down was rejected by 13 publishers before Collings accepted it, it has never been out of print, and is Penguin Books' best-selling novel of all time. It won both the Carnegie Medal and the Guardian Prize. The title refers to a hill in the north of Hampshire, England, near the area where Adams grew up. The story has its roots in the tales that Richard Adams made up for his young daughters during long car journeys. As he explained in 2007 in an interview with the BBC, he "began telling the story of the rabbits . . . improvised off the top of my head, as we were driving along." He based the struggles of the animals on the struggles he and his friends encountered during the Battle of Oosterbeek in 1944. The daughters insisted he write it down"they were very, very persistent." After some delay he began writing in the evenings and completed it 18 months later.

Add to basketHardcover. Condition: Fine. FIRST ILLUSTRATED EDITION (the deluxe issue). Number 238 of 250 beautifully bound copies signed by the author and with a foreword by him about the genesis of the story published here for the first time. The present copy is one of 30 from this edition, seemingly chosen at random, with an original watercolour illustration by John Lawrence signed with his initials as frontispiece. Typical of cultish books, numerous publishers rejected the manuscript, one telling the author bluntly that no-one wanted to read a novel about rabbits. Yet once it reached publication it went on to be translated into eighteen languages and became Penguin's all-time bestseller in the US. For a time it held the record for the highest sum paid for paperback rights. The animated cartoon film which followed in 1978 consolidated its success and allowed Adams to leave his job in the Civil Service to concentrate on writing full-time. "Again and again, I have been asked what the tale is really about. This reminds me of C.S. Lewis's comment about the apple in the story of Adam and Eve. 'Many people', he said, 'have asked what the apple represents. The apple was an apple'. Watership Down is a yarn - a fantasy about rabbits in the English countryside. It is not a political allegory or a sociological fable . I like to think that it is an animal fantasy solidly in the mainstream of such English books - Beatrix Potter, Kenneth Grahame, T.H. White and the rest of that honourable crew" (from Adams' Foreword). Large octavo. Original dark green crushed morocco by Sangorski & Sutcliffe (stamped on turn-in), gilt vignette of rabbits on upper board, spine with five raised bands with lettering and decorations in gilt within compartments, all edges and turn-ins gilt, marbled endpapers, original matching marbled slipcase. Numerous illustrations in colour and black and white, folding colour map tipped-in at rear. Spine very lightly sunned, 1cm scratch to upper cover but hardly visible.
