Weegee worked in Manhattan, New York City's Lower East Side as a press photographer during the 1930s and 1940s, and he developed his signature style by following the city's emergency services and documenting their activity. Much of his work depicted unflinchingly realistic scenes of urban life, crime, injury and death. Weegee published photographic books and also worked in cinema, initially making his own short films and later collaborating with film directors such as Jack Donohue and Stanley Kubrick." Arthur (Usher) Fellig was born in Ukraine in 1899 (and passed away in New York in 1968), but became known by his pseudonym Weegee. He was one of the very first "photojournalists" to use police-scanner to enable him to arrive at crime scenes often before even the homicide detectives did, but he had preternatural senses, too. Other journalists, it is said, asked him if he used a Ouja-board to find the crime scenes, but though he said yes, he didn't know how to spell Ouja . . . Thus was born his professional pseudonym. This fine exemplar covers methods and processes such as photocaricature, kaleidoscope, use of mirrors and photomontage, infrared light, and the like. Sturdy, attractive, tightly bound, internally clean hardcover copy, with unbruised tips, neat and tidy paste-downs; not ex-library, with neither highlighting nor underlining.
