B/w woodcuts by Margot Hamand, pictorial end-papers. Blue cloth, spine titled in gilt, small gilt fish vignette on upper board. Slightly bumped and used, good copy. Lacks dust-wrapper. A pot-pourri of angling information: glossaries of angling terms, an anthology of short angling pieces, the fisherman's inn, cooking and boat (and coracle) handling, a who's who of anglers, fly-dressers and angling writers, and lots, lots more. "Page after page is as alluring as a well-tied fly, yet there is no lack of very useful information and hints on tackle and boats, flies and baits; scale reading; measuring, packing and cooking fish; fisherman's birds, flowers, weeds and inns. A valuable book of reference." (The Scotsman). The standard edition of this book had two-tone cloth (green spine / blue boards) with white spine label. There was also a contemporary, signed, limited edition. This copy is of a further edition of 1935, printed on thin India paper like a pocket bible, but bound in full blue cloth with a small gilt vignette on front cover. No limitation stated but certainly a superior edition. The same dimensions and number of pages, but only half the thickness of the standard edition. .

Hardcover. Condition: Good. Lime green boards are rubbed and a little sunned. Head and tail of spine bumped. Binding is strong and neat, yet split at the centre. Sydney Ure Smith's inscription on front free endpaper, dated 1947. Free endpapers and pastedowns are lightly foxed and stained, so too are the page edges. Written by British authors and anglers Eric Taverner and John Moore. Illustrated by Margot Hamand, a British artist known for her wood-cuts. In the original full green calf binding. Externally, smart with light shelf wear and fading to the extremities. The odd mark to the board. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are very bright and clean with the odd handling mark. A fascinating and very varied mountaineering compendium; includes 'The Ballad of Idwal Slabs' and much more besides.

Johns / by / Mrs. Jane Deakins," mounted to the upper board; contemporary inscription on the title page "remember [the] one thing / needful. J. Deakins." ESTC T181075. Contemporary polished olive calf, boards framed with a double ornamental border, flat spine with embossed ornamental rules, marbled endpapers. Top edge trimmed closely in binding, taking a number of running titles and parts of others. With the defect noted, a very good copy.

First edition, presentation copy, inscribed by Wodehouse to his biographer and bibliographer Jasen on the front free endpaper, "To David from Plum, P. G. Wodehouse". Only Wodehouse's close friends and family knew him as "Plum". David A. Jasen (1937-2022) was the dedicatee of Stiff Upper Lip, Jeeves (1963). A ragtime scholar and performer, he shared a passion for music with Wodehouse, a famed musical lyricist. Wodehouse edited and wrote the introduction for this collection of stories by such fellow humourists as Robert Benchley, Leo Rosten, and S. J. Perelman. Jasen p. 257; McIlvaine B10a. Octavo.
