Hardcover. Condition: Good. 1st Edition. 421 pages. Octavo (8" x 5 1/4) bound in original publisher's red cloth wih gilt lettering to spine and cover. First edition. The Pit: A Story of Chicago (1903) by Frank Norris is a novel about capitalism, greed, and marriage, set in the Chicago Board of Trade's wheat pits, following speculator Curtis Jadwin and his wife Laura as his obsession with cornering the wheat market strains their relationship, ultimately leading to his financial ruin and a search for a new beginning. It's the second book in Norris's unfinished Epic of the Wheat trilogy, exploring the human cost of economic ambition and the power of nature. The story that was released serially in the Saturday Evening Post was titled The Pit: A Romance of Chicago and was significantly shorter than that of the published book. Many descriptive passages and much of the "Conclusion" were cut out by Norris and the magazine's editors to better appeal to the Post's readership. The version produced by Doubleday, Page is the full novel as Norris intended it to be read. Condition: Over opened at half title, corners bumped and rubbed, spine sunned, some toning to page and light rippling to head pages, some soiling to covers else good.

Condition: VERY GOOD. First printing. A fictionalized and sympathetic biography of Benjamin P. Hutchinson, "Old Hutch," one of the first of the great speculators in commodity futures - in this case, wheat - between the 1870s to the early 1890s. Interesting look at how these markets work, the bulls who buy and the bears who short the commodities - at the time, plungers - those who went all out to control the markets - were considered heroes. Among other famous plungers who appear in this book are J. D. Armour and Joe Leiter. Illustrated with photographs. 249 pp. Very good in gold cloth - usual toning to the pages, some soiling to the covers, but a tight and straight copy. Comment "a very interesting record" on the front pastedown.

Edward Jerome Dies, b. 1891, was a financial journalist who later formed a public relations bureau, then became president of the National Soybean Processors Association from the late 1930s to 1945. This, his first book, is a lucid exposition of the workings of the Grain Exchange at the Chicago Board of Trade. In particular, the author explains the value of short-selling and futures trading as part of the marketing system so valuable to producers and dealers. He went on to write many more books about "big business," the relevancy of which has not changed over the years.
