Cute illustrations, inside pages clean and unmarked. Poem on the front and back endpapers by Hilaire Belloc. A bright and attractive copy. Black and white plus colour illustrations by Eloise Wilkin. Like new! I have never read a more charming book on Tibet!!! unpag. 51 S. Eloise Margaret Wilkin, born Eloise Margaret Burns (March 30, 1904 - October 4, 1987), was an award-winning American illustrator, best known as an illustrator of Little Golden Books. Wilkin often illustrated the titles of her sister, children's author Esther Burns Wilkin, who married Eloise's brother-in-law. Many of the picture books she illustrated have become classics of American children's literature. Jane Werner Watson, who edited and wrote hundreds of Golden Books, called Eloise Wilkin "the soul of Little Golden Books",[1] and Wilkin's books remain highly collectible. Her watercolor and colored pencil illustrations are known for their glowing depiction of babies, toddlers, and their parents in idyllic rural and domestic settings. She became a freelance illustrator after graduating from the Rochester Institute of Technology and a year later was in New York City, with Joan Esley, another graduate. Maybe that's why Joan's LGB, Play Street looks so much like and Eloise book. Her first day in New York she was given a book contract to illustrate for Century Publishing. Married, Sydney Wilkin, around 1935, they moved to Canandaigua to illustrate and raise a family. Eloise, illustrated her first book with her sister Esther Wilkin (married Sydney's brother), Mrs. Peregrine and the Yak, in 1939. They would collaborate on around 20 books. In 1943, George Duplaix, and editor for Simon & Schuster and one of the key people in the development of Little Golden Books asked her to come to New York and talk about a contract. She told him she couldn't because she hadn't a babysitter. Duplaix, would not take no and Eloise went to New York and signed a contract with the Little Golden Book people to do around four books a year. She illustrated, exclusively for Golden Books from 1943 to 1961. Her last book for Golden was published around the mid 80's.

Hardcover. Condition: Near Fine. 1st Edition. It Catches My Heart in Its Hands was produced by Jon and Louise Webb, founders of LouJon Press. It was printed on an old sheet-fed press and bound in their tiny apartment in New Orleans in 1963. Unlike the Bukowski chapbooks that came before, this was a true book and an incredible book at that. This incredibly beautiful book is every bit a piece of art as the poetry itself. It was hand-printed on thick paper stock of various colors, dispersed with tissues and hand-bound with a cork-lined cover. The detail, the printing methods, the craftsmanship, and the pure insanity it took to create the book was as unparalleled then and as it is today What actually makes this copy rare is the white, heavy stock page on which Bukowski has added a quotation. This page is absent in "regular" copies of the book. Instead, on the "regular" copies, Bukowski's signature and date appears on the first blank page, which is purple. Why Jon Webb stopped sending Bukowski the white pages for signing is unknown. Perhaps he couldn't afford the white paper stock for all copies and started sending him the purple pages to sign. On the white page on this copy, Bukowski has written: WEAK MEN ARGUE IN CROWDS; STRONG ME CRY IN THE DARK. Charles Bukowski 4-7-63 In this copy, Bukowski has also added his signature with another quotation on the purple page where just the signature and date would normally appear. This is dated 12-15-63, so Bukowski wrote this much later than the white page. At some point, the white and purple pages were inserted into the copy together: THE POETS WOULD BE MUCH WORSE THAN THEY ARE ONLY IT DOESN'T PAY ENOUGH. This copy has the orange/red color block over the title and the turquoise lines on the cork cover, but other colors were used on these copies as well. The wrap-around jacket underneath the cork is on yellow paper (some are white). I've heard from more than one person that the ones with the turquoise lines are also rarer, but that's not the case in my experience, so don't buy a copy just for that. This copy also comes with the uncommon letterpress sheet that is a facsimile of the letter he sent to the Webbs upon receiving the first copy of the book on November 23, 1963. The sheet measures 10.5" x 8" and is folded once, with the deckled edge sticking out above the portion of the sheet paper below it. The other three pages are blank. The letterpress sheet is in Fine condition. This copy also comes with a customer Clamshell Box. In addition to publishing two Bukowski books, Jon and Louise "Gypsy Lou" Webb published four issues of The Outsider magazine, which became the standard for poetry journals at the time. No other publication attracted nearly the talent that appeared in its pages and the production value of the magazine itself was unrivaled. Bukowski appeared in all four issues, with a large collection of poems in Outsider 1 (1961) and as the named "Outside of the Year" in Outsider 3 (1963), featuring Bukowski on the cover and a large center section. File Box 1 and Case 5. Signed by Author(s).

The present portfolio represents some of Cox's finest achievements using this idiosyncratic mode of drawing. Far from a mere curiosity, Cox's blind drawings clearly reflect a spiritual accomplishment of a high order; though the result of an unconventional discipline, the drawings are marked with the elegance of line and subtlety of feeling that come only from long submission to the constraint of technique.

Add to basketNo Binding. Condition: Very Good. A series of 13 emotionally tortured letters from Michel Saint-Denis [1897-1971] to the much younger English actress, Vera Lindsay [1911-1992]. Saint Denis was one of the foremost theatre practitioners of the twentieth century. He began his career as assistant to his uncle, Jacques Copeau, eventually taking over the leadership of The Quinze, Copeau's company of young actors. In 1931, Saint-Denis brought the troupe to London, where their physicality and fusion of Japanese Noh traditions and Commedia-style mask work caused a sensation. Returning to France, he found himself facing problems on many fronts: funding, infighting and professional jealousies. The contacts he had made with a rising generation of British actors, amongst them Laurence Olivier and Peggy Ashcroft, suggested a fertile ground for his ideas. During the 1930s, he produced several plays in England, making many converts to his philosophy of what a progressive non-Boulevard theatre might be. Among the younger actors who fell under his influence was Vera Lindsay, nee Poliakoff. Born in St Petersburg, she was brought to England by her parents after the Russian Revolution. Vera was a member of Saint Denis' acting company, both in France and in England, and played Olivia in his production of Twelfth Night in 1938. These letters demonstrate that their relationship went beyond the professional, something that no previous biographer of Saint-Denis appears to have noted. The correspondence runs from 1940, when Saint Denis was back in uniform in the French army, returning to England during the retreat from Dunkirk, through to 1944, when he was working with the BBC broadcasting to Occupied France. The letters, often several pages long, chart his tortured feelings for Vera, fourteen years his junior, clearly holding out the - eventually forlorn - hope that they might rekindle their pre-war relationship. Throughout the 1930s, Vera was married to an army officer, Major Basil Burton, and eventually divorced in 1940. She went on to marry the newspaper editor, Gerald Barry, in 1944. Saint Denis was also married. Marie Ostroga, who had remained in France and was involved with another woman, Marie-Madeleine Gautier, an actress. Towards the end of the correspondence, Saint Denis appears to be encouraging Vera to continue in the theatre, but Lindsay (now Barry) retired from the stage and became known as a promoter of the Arts in England. Post-war, Saint Denis founded an acting school at the Old Vic, before playing an important role in Canada, France and New York, where he was instrumental in developing the Juilliard School's drama division. While the letters clearly show a man struggling with intense emotional distress, they also reveal how his self-pity takes on an often unpleasant, bullying, harassing tone. A unique, insightful archive of letters from a man who played an outsize role in the post-war training of actors in Europe, England and the USA. All 13 letters have been rendered into English. Signed by Author(s).
