Gr.-8°, Ledereinband. 4to (265 x 180 mm). IIlustrated with engraved frontispieces, vignette titles, plates, text illustrations, and initials, all on India paper. The Christmas Books with colored plates. One of 1,000 large paper copies. Period dark blue full crushed morocco bindings, raised bands gilt ruled, ornate gilt stamped compartments & spine lettering, boards outlined in concentric sets of triple gilt ruled boxes, ornate gilt stamped designs to the four corners w/ red morocco inlays, a.e.g., both inner boards with large central red morocco panels, ornately gilt ruled dentelles, blue silk-moire endpapers. Numerous original watercolours scattered through-out the first volume, including several full page hand colored original engravings plus many smaller and lovely marginal watercolours. All the watercolours are quite beautiful, well executed and of a high artistic standard. A monumental and imposing set, composed of 50 volumes [of 52]. The set survives lacking 2 volumes (volumes numbered 40 & 42). Nevertheless, this unfortunate fault is entirely forgivable when you actually view the set in a bookcase. Overall, the set is well preserved, leather remaining supple & rich in appearance. Spines uniformly and pleasantly age-toned to brown as often occurs with dark blue leather, some small scattered scuffing & rubbing in spots, a few spine ends rubbed, worn or slightly chipped or fraying, some raised bands scuffed, other minor age flaws, etc. But overall a very attractive and imposing turn-of-the- century leather bound set in a deluxe period binding, perhaps custom-bound for the original owner. Almost certainly a massive set such as this would have been offered in different levels of binding, from simple cloth up through 1/2 leather to the top, full crushed morocco with inlay. This set almost transcends typical publishers leather bindings of the era and strongly suggests custom. Handsome shelf appearance despite the light age wear. On the shelf you would almost never notice the lacking volumes, as the spine base numbering is tiny and visually lost in the beautiful gilt decorated spines. With some volumes placed boards outward for display, this fault would be undetectable and of no significance. Final leaf of vol. 1 has a full page inscription which reads This set of Thackeray of the original Smith, Elder Edition was presented to my father, Eugene Field, in London in 1889 by his friend Andrew Lang and he had it specially bound. Eugene Field, Sept. 20- 1924. This inscription was then notarized in Illinois by G.D. Edwards. Sprache: Englisch Gewicht in Gramm: 50550.

See his entry in the Oxford DNB, which states that he had two children - Charles Horace Kenney and the actress Rosa Kenney - by his marriage to Miss Rosa Stewart at the Paris embassy in 1859. 4pp, 12mo. In good condition, lightly aged. On bifolium, with thin strip of tape from mount adhering to the reverse of the second leaf. Folded once. Sixty-six lines of text, addressed to 'Dearest Wife' and signed 'Your affectionate husband / C. L. Kenney.' Begins: 'I dare say you have thought it unkind of me not to write for so many days, but the fact is I had nothing to say that was either interesting or particularly pleasant, for I have been very dull and [?] as well as out of health.' Besides a visit from 'Mrs Jeafferson' he has been 'engaged the whole time writing letters to and receiving visits of governesses. The number of ladies who were seen to enter my house on those days must have made the neighbours fancy I was indemnifying myself for your absence at a nice rate. You are sure to hear of it on your return.' A pigeon pie supplied by Mrs Jeafferson has been 'polished off in no time' by him and 'the boys'. He wishes he could have 'added my little quota' to her birthday presents, but 'Jack' brought something with him 'from the Exhibition'. He intended to have his 'photographic portrait done en carte de visite but the weather has been so dark'. He wants to 'bring Sallie a photograph of some statue in the Exhibition [?]. What would she like? The Reading Girl? The Dream of Joy? or what?' He complains of the weather, then refers to 'Mrs & Miss Jerdan'. He then writes: 'I have seen Dick Lee whom I took on Sunday to see the Picture Gallery. The same day I dined with Thackeray who was very kind in his enquries afer you & the babies., so were the Miss T's. Miss Crook asked also kindly for them. Kiss them both well for me and tell them I will bring them a penny toy or piece from dear old London - Also [same old?] of the [German Court?].'.

(1828-1896, Journalist & Writer), the first, signed 'W. M. Thackeray' saying that "Mr Langley has just brought me the Critic (which I never see or hear of except from him) and which says how you are going to edit the Temple Bar Magazine, and how I have said Hogarth was 'dull verbiage'. Who writes these lies? I mean that lie in the last sentence. Hogarth was not dull, or the deuce is in it. I have always spoken of it as liking it heartily. I thought of Temple Bar for a frontispiece for our own Magazine, and wish prosperity to your's. There are people enough in London to crowd Temple Bar and Corn Hill too, and my belief in our success helps another. May your head long be on the top of the Temple Bar Mag!.", 1 side 8vo., 36 Onslow Square, 27th September with the year put in in another hand as 1860, the second letter is signed with initials asks "Where is that note I wrote just now directed to Upton Court near Slough. To say that W. M. Thacker Ay would be happy to be your backer? The note has disappeared under the heap of papers & will turn up 2 months hence or perhaps has gone to the post already. The purport of it you see. A wet blanket is always good hydropathic practice. If we are killed, we are killed. I was, at the Traveller next door and survived the dose. I only had one pill but the man gave it expressly because I was a deed literary fellow.", 1 side 8vo., no place, dated in another hand March In January 1860 Thackeray had become editor of the Cornhill Magazine, the literary journal established to attract the rising writers of the day. His acquaintance with the literary world enabled him to assemble a notable selection of contributors, but it was said to have pained him to have to reject so many mediocre authors in order to appease his readership. His declining health forced him to relinquish the editorship in April 1862. Sala was the first editor of the 'Temple Bar', a magazine which came out in December 1860 as a rival to the Cornhill. Sala resigned in 1866 when the magazine was taken over.
