Witt: "The origin of this Library of Reproductions of European Pictures and Drawings of all Schools and Periods from the 12th century onwards was a general interest in Art, and in Painting in particular. But the idea developed as the want of some central and comprehensive storehouse for easy and rapid reference and research asserted itself." (p. iii) The book is a list of artists represented in the collection, in alpha order by surname, and with nationalties and birth/death dates. No titles of individual works appear, and no illustrations accompany the text, other than a view of the library interior as frontispiece. A supplement was issued five years later.
