Condition: Very good plus. First edition of the book that gave Americans their own fairy tale, with all the textual points of the first state and a mixed state B/C of the plates. Although it was only one of four books Baum published in 1900, THE WIZARD OF OZ was his most ambitious as a publication: he and illustrator W.W. Denslow envisioned an elaborate production of color-printed plates to reflect the role that color plays in the story. The expense turned publishers away until Baum and Denslow took the gamble to pay for the printing costs themselves. Their instinct was right: the book quickly became the fastest selling children's book in the United States, and was soon turned into a sensation at the theater. Denslow and Baum would soon part acrimoniously over the share of the profits (Denslow purchased, no joke, an island from his); the rest of the Oz books in Baum's lifetime were illustrated by John R. Neill. Baum has a complicated legacy: he was also a newspaperman whose opinions on Native American rights were especially pernicious. The Oz books offered a dream world for the children of Manifest Destiny, emigrating across the West. Yet over the years Dorothy's journey with her motley friends has proven fertile soil for a variety of new interpretations, including THE WIZ (1978) and WICKED (1995), demonstrating its power as a modern mythos. The original story may surprise readers, with silver shoes instead of ruby slippers, and an Emerald City that is green only because the visitors must wear colored goggles. The book's bibliography is notoriously complicated, with more than a dozen different points, and the appearance of mixed states common. This copy contains two corrected plates, but the text entirely matches the first state. It comes from the library of Roland Baughman, a noted Baum collector, scholar, and head of Special Collections at Columbia University from 1946 until his death in 1967. His Baum collection was exhibited in 1956 at Columbia and he co-edited the accompanying exhibition catalogue with Joan Baum. This is a wonderful copy of an iconic children's book. 8.25'' x 6''. Original full green cloth stamped in red and green, "Geo. M. Hill Co." stamped in red serif typeface on spine, "o" within the "C" (state C per Riley). Illustrated pastedowns in black and grey (front) and black and red (rear). Box around publisher ads, first line on page 14 reads "low wail on" (1st state), p.81 fourth line from bottom spells "peices" incorrectly, p.[227] 1st line reads "While Tin Woodman," colophon in 11 lines with box, and all other State A points per Riley; perfect type on pages 100, 186. Color plates corrected on page 34 & 92, but copyright notice with R extending below baseline (Riley B/C). 216, [1] pages. Signature of Roland Bauman on final leaf. Housed in a custom quarter morocco clamshell box. Cloth quite fresh, with faint sunning to spine. Hinges skillfully repaired. Short closed tear to one plate, else text block clean and bright.

Hard Cover. Condition: Very Good. Denslow, W. W. (illustrator). First Edition. Illustrated by W. W. Denslow, with 24 color plates. First edition, first printing. Binding state "B" with publisher's imprint in red un-serifed type at foot of spine (copies of binding "A" with publisher's imprint to spine in green are extremely scarce and generally considered to be pre-publication copies for friends of the author and publisher.) Text is second state, containing the following corrected issue points: page 2 without box around ads, 1st line of page 14 reads "low wail of", 4th line from the bottom of page 81 spells "pieces" correctly, 1st line of page 227 reads "While The Woodman", and colophon with no surrounding box and reset to 13 lines. Illustrations are mixed state: plate facing page 34 is first state with two dark blue blots to the face of the moon, plate facing page 92 is second state without pink shading at the horizon, and verso of title page is second state with a press-printed copyright notice. Publisher's pale green pictorial cloth stamped in green and red with The Cowardly Lion to front board, rear board with Dorothy, Tin Woodman, and The Scarecrow. Very good, with some toning to spine, light soiling to cloth, shallow chipping to cloth at spine ends, corners rubbed to boards, some repair to front hinge, small crack to gutter of pp. [224 - 225], and plate facing p. 102 loose but holding. Overall, an excellent copy of this iconic children's book, with clean plates and pages. Hanff & Greene, I. The Wonderful Wizard of Oz, subsequently published under the shortened title The Wizard of Oz, is the first of Baum's books to feature the fictional Land of Oz. Inspired by the Brothers Grimm and Hans Christian Andersen, Baum created the first truly American fairy tale, with references to American physical and social landscapes. The story features a young female protagonist, Dorothy Gale, and tells of her adventures in the colorful world of Oz after being transported there from her Kansas home by a tornado. The novel is illustrated by William Wallace Denslow, a book designer and political cartoonist who had previously illustrated Baum's earlier works. The author and illustrator later disagreed about whose contribution garnered the book's commercial success and therefore deserved more of its royalties. As a result of this conflict, John R. Neill illustrated Baum's thirteen subsequent Oz books. In 1939, L Frank Baum's book was adapted into the musical film, The Wizard of Oz, starring Judy Garland in the role of Dorothy. The film made some notable changes to the book, for example Dorothy's slippers are silver in the book but ruby red in the film, and the Emerald City is actually green in the film, whereas in the book the city's greenness is an illusion created by green-tinted glasses that the city's inhabitants and visitors are forced to wear. The film is considered one of the greatest of all-time and introduced songs like "Over the Rainbow," "If I Only Had a Heart," and "We're Off to See the Wizard." The Wonderful Wizard of Oz also inspired Gregory Maguire's novel, Wicked (1995), which was adapted into a smash-hit Broadway musical by the same name, with music and lyrics by Stephen Schwartz.

This is one of 26 lettered copies (this being letter K), fully leatherbound and complete with portfolio of signed prints. In super-fine condition. Accompanied by a portfolio of illustrations and a piece of original art. Limited to 26 copies Trimmed page size - 240 x 170mm Signed by Gregory Manchess Printed letterpress on Madrid Litho mould-made paper by Phil Abel and Robert Hetherington of Hand and Eye Letterpress. Printed in black and green throughout on a Heidelberg cylinder press using photopolymer plates. This edition is newly illustrated by award-winning oil painter Gregory Manchess. There are 22 paintings, comprising 21 full-page and one half-page colour images. This includes 4 double page spreads tipped onto tabs. All images are giclee printed by Hurtwood and sewn into the structure of the binding. The lettered edition is bound as a design binding, fully inlaid with leather and consisting of multiple inlaid panels to create a patchwork of greens. The design is inspired by the greens of the Emerald City as well as the journey through the woods along the yellow brick road. The greens on either side of the road suggest the shapes of the trees and the shafts of light shining through the canopy. The leather used includes J. Hewit & Sons straight grain, Harmatan finest, Oasis Fine and Hewit's Pentland goatskins. This variety of very fine grade leathers creates a lovely selection of grains and finishes across the different panels. There is no set pattern for the positioning of the leather so each copy will be slightly different. Endpapers are stiff leaf, made from hand marbled paper by Freya Scott of Paperwilds and backed with foil blocked Napura Khepera paper. Silk ribbon marker. Sculpted leather head-caps. Silver on all three page edges. The book comes in a rounded spine, full leather solander box. Covered in yellow goatskin and foil blocked to the front and back board with a swarm of flying monkeys in black. The text on the front board and spine is foil blocked in green. The trays are covered in yellow Colorado cloth and lined with charcoal Suedel. The solander box contains a green Colorado cloth covered portfolio with a four-tongue enclosure, holding 4 hand numbered giclee prints on 250gsm Somerset paper and an original pencil sketch by Gregory Manchess. Please be aware that there may be minor alterations to the design as we enter the production stage. Notes from the publisher - This edition is freshly illustrated with 22 stunning oil paintings by award-winning artist, Gregory Manchess. All copies are signed by the artist. The books are printed with a combination of letterpress and litho for the Numbered edition and letterpress and giclee for the Lettered edition. The text is printed letterpress by Hand and Eye in two colours throughout, using photopolymer plates. The colour images of both editions are printed by Hurtwood directly to the page and sewn into the structure of the bindings rather than being tipped into or onto the pages. The exception is the four double page spreads which are tipped onto tabs, allowing the pages to fold out without any sewing through the centre. Our edition contains an afterword by the artist. All copies, as always, are hand bound by us using the finest materials available. More photos available upon request - please contact me for any questions, including about tariffs. Other match-lettered editions from Lyra's Press also available at this time. Signed by Illustrator(s).
