Alan Stuart Blinder ( born October 14, 1945) is an American economics professor at Princeton University and is listed among the most influential economists in the world according to IDEAS/RePEc. He is a leading macroeconomist, politically liberal, and a champion of Keynesian economics and policies. Blinder is the Gordon S. Rentschler Memorial Professor of Economics and Public Affairs at Princeton where he has been since 1971; from 1988 to 1990, he chaired the economics department. Also in 1990, he founded Princeton's Griswold Center for Economic Policy Studies. In 1975, Blinder served as the Deputy Assistant Director of the Congressional Budget Office. Blinder served on President Bill Clinton's Council of Economic Advisers from January 1993 to June 1994 and as the vice chairman of the Federal Reserve from June 1994 to January 1996. His academic work has focused particularly on monetary policy and central banking, and on the "offshoring" of jobs. His writing has been published in The New York Times, The Washington Post, as well as a monthly column in The Wall Street Journal. Regarding the 2008 near-meltdown of major financial institutions, Blinder drew ten lessons for fellow economists, including "Excessive complexity is not just anti-competitive, it's dangerous." With bracing clarity, Blinder shows us how the U.S. financial system, which had grown far too complex for its own good-and too unregulated for the public good-experienced a perfect storm beginning in 2007. When America's financial structure crumbled, the damage proved to be not only deep, but wide. It took the crisis for the world to discover, to its horror, just how truly interconnected-and fragile-the global financial system is. The second part of the story explains how American and international government intervention kept us from a total meltdown. Many of the U.S. government's actions, particularly the Fed's, were previously unimaginable. And to an amazing-and certainly misunderstood-extent, they worked. The worst did not happen. Blinder offers clear-eyed answers to the questions still before us, even if some of the choices ahead are as divisive as they are unavoidable. After the Music Stopped is an essential history that we cannot afford to forget, because one thing history teaches is that it will happen here again. Derived from a Publishers Weekly article: As the U.S. economy desperately tries to crawl out of its gloomy cave, many still feel the impact of the 2007 financial crisis. Here, noted analyst Blinder provides insights on why it happened, covering three critical questions: How did we get into this mess? What was done to correct problems? and have we learned anything? He opens by addressing the rise of unemployment rates and the housing market crash, with Blinder explaining what happened to big players like AIG, Merrill Lynch, and WaMu as they collapsed. He provides a clear critical analysis of the actions authorities proposed to prevent large corporations from crumbling, and offers his own opinion on how to fix the system. Later chapters explain the key weaknesses that predate the fateful summer of 2007, and what happened to the citizens, why the government took the actions it did, and why those policies were wise. As Blinder outlines the causes of the financial crisis, he acknowledges that questions still linger in the public mind: Has history taught us anything, or are we headed for a repeat of this kind of crisis?

Condition: Fine. CHA01025? A vintage 1947 dated hand signed photo for Phil Tate British Bandleader whose career I have detailed below, who has hand signed the photo where the signature rests perfectly accompanying the portrait, and whilst perhaps a little aged with small top right corner indent to allow this is otherwise great condition and the signing is undedicated too.Born in Bramley Leeds Tate played violin from the age of eight, and was later an autodidact on clarinet and saxophone. He formed his own group, the Five Quavers, while in high school, and played in the RAF Silver Wings Dance Orchestra during World War II. The ensemble proved so cohesive that all twelve of its members decided to continue playing together after the war, under the name Phil Tate & His Orchestra, taking a residency at Leas Cliff Hall in Folkestone After appearing in the 1951 film Green Grow The Rushes, they took their next residency at the Hammersmith Palais and signed to Oriole Records.Tate's orchestra played at the Hammersmith for a full decade, then moved to the Ilford Palais. Tate hosted the BBC show Non-Stop-Pop, where he interviewed The Beatles on 30 July 1963. On radio, he was best known for his 144 appearances in Music While You Work. ?In 1964, his orchestra took up at the Locarno Ballroom in Streatham; the next year they appeared on the BBC program Music Through Midnight.??Tate's most longstanding association came in 1965, when he became musical director for the Miss World Pageant. He disbanded his orchestra in 1967, and ran Mecca Agencies in addition to his duties with Miss World, where he remained until his retirement in 1992. He served as director of the Music Users' Council from 1992 to 2000, after which he retired. Tate died on 9 December 2005, at the age of 83.

Add to basketFrom the Macqueen-Pope papers (see his entry in the Oxford DNB). 1p, 4to. In good condition, lightly aged and folded three times. Signed 'Basil Ashmore'. Begins: 'Dear Mr MacQueen Pope, / Im [sic] sorry to keep bothering you about this film on Kean. Last time I saw you, you said "see me in March"[.] This week you said "leave it until they start in April"[.] / You may remember that I am a director, who has recently worked with Michael Powell on his new film.' Ashmore is 'anxious to contact the producer of your Kean film in case I can assist on this. I feel that if I leave it till the start any assistant director's [sic] will be already fixed'. He is 'sorry to be such a nuisance', but is 'extremely keen [sic] on this subject, and most anxious to have a chance to write to the producer.' MP's biography of Kean appeared in the year of his death 1960, and as early as 1943 he was writing to Sir Donald Wolfit about his plans for a play about Kean. Nothing came of that project, and the same appears to be true of the present scheme. Nor is there any record of Ashmore working with the director Michael Powell.

In very good condition overall. Gould, an American composer, conductor, and pianist, was a child prodigy recognized for both his compositional and improvisational talent; he composed his first work, "Just Six," at that young age. He went on to write in many different genres, including orchestral works and for Broadway, film, television, and dance, collaborating with Jerome Robbins (Interplay, 1945 and I'm Old Fashioned, 1983) and Agnes de Mille (Fall River Legend, 1947). "He was on the staff of Radio City Music Hall when it opened (1932), and came of age during the golden era of radio: beginning at the age of 21 and for the following eight years he conducted, arranged and composed for the weekly programme 'Music for Today' on WOR, New York. . Gould's career as a symphonic composer began with the première by Stokowski and the Philadelphia Orchestra of Chorale and Fugue in Jazz (1933). Spirituals, his first work to enter the orchestral repertory, was first performed by Gould himself at a New York festival in 1941; performances followed shortly afterwards by, among many others, the New York PO and the Cleveland Orchestra. During the 1940s Gould continued to compose for the concert hall and radio, but also wrote for film, stage and ballet." Ed Matthew in Grove Music Online. Signed.
