First Edition Signed
Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. No Jacket. 1st Edition. 286pp. Blue boards, gilt titles on spine and front board. Cloth of spine a bit faded but titles remain bright. Small nick about 1" down front gutter. Mild wear to extremities. Binding remains sound. Abrasion at upper edge of front board, cloth slightly puckered near lower edge of front board. Pictorial frontispiece by Jekyll, as are all other photos and illustrations in the volume. Previous owner's name and date 1960 on title page. Letter tipped in on FFEP from Jekyll, on her letterhead from Munstead Wood, Godalming. In the letter, Jekyll responds to a request that the writer be allowed to come and sketch her garden. She writes that she has made a rule of refusing such requests, at least to those lacking a formal introduction, but, that she cannot refuse the request of an oversea visitor. She adds, emphatically, that "anything sketched here is not for publication," underlining the last three words. "I am old and very tired and try to keep absolutely quiet," she writes. The letter is undated, but as Jekyll refers to herself as "old and very tired," it's safe to conclude that the letter dates from nearer the end of her time living at Munstead Wood than the beginning. Jekyll's Wood and Garden, with a brief letter showing a glimpse of her personality and generosity of spirit. Size: 8vo - over 7¾ - 9¾" tall. Signed by Author(s). Book.
