John Hunter (1728-1793) "gave a great impetus to the study of the morbid anatomy; he was the veritable founder of experimental and surgical pathology and one of the three greatest surgeons of all time. He was responsible for the commencement of some of the greatest medical museums, the Hunterian museum of the Royal College of Surgeons of England was based on his own private collection; much of it was destroyed during an air raid in May, 1941.".…

First collected edition, 4 volumes in 2, 8vo, plus quarto atlas; frontispiece portrait after Flaxman and folding facsimile in text volumes; atlas with 14 preliminary leaves, frontispiece portrait after Joshua Reynolds, and 59 (of 60) engraved plates - lacking plate 52: "Two specimens of Siren, or Mud Iguana from South Carolina." Nice enough set in recent quarter green morocco over green cloth sides, gilt lettering direct on spines. Bookplate of James Mead, Curator Emeritus of Marine Mammals at the Smithsonian. Hunter (1728-1793) was an eminent anatomist and surgeon whose work on gun-shot wounds and inflammation brought him early prominence.
