Add to basketSigned by Churchill and dated '20 June, 1956' on the half-title of volume I. A rousing account of the early history of Britain, the work describes the great men and women of the past and their impact on the development of the legal and political institutions of the English. Indeed, Churchill celebrates the creation of the constitutional monarchy and parliamentary system and the kings, queens, and leading nobles who helped create English democracy. Following Marlborough's victory at Blenheim in 1704 and ending with Wellington's defeat of Napoleon at Waterloo in 1815, Churchill recounts Britain's rise to world leadership over the course of the eighteenth century. This last volume spans the period between 1815 and 1901. It draws to a close when the British Empire is at its peak - when a staggering one-fifth of the human race was presided over by the then, longest reigning monarch in British history, Queen Victoria. As with the other volumes it is a history not only of the English-speaking peoples, but also of the world that they inhabit. Churchill traces the footsteps of these inhabitants, whether it is to Canada and South Africa, Australia and New Zealand or across the Atlantic Ocean to the United States. He charts the rise of Germany and the unification of Italy, and examines the situation in the Balkans in 1878 - all of which had a deep and lasting impact on the geography of the European continent today. Churchill commenced writing this work in the 1930s when he was basically unemployed but didn't complete it until 1958, by which time, following the Second World War, he firmly believed in Britain's 'Special Relationship with the U.S. and in consequence, that country's history is diligently covered. First editions, signed by the author in volume one; 4 vols, staggered publication from 1956 to 1958, 8vo; illustrated with maps and charts; finely bound in half red morocco gilt by Asprey, spines elaborately gilt in compartments, all edges gilt, marbled endpapers; a fine set. Add to basket[Political and Military History] Publishing Churchill at the peak of his literary fame. An extensive archive of papers retained by Churchill's primary post-war UK publishers, Cassell, shedding considerable light on the evolving texts of Churchill's books, Cassell's publishing decisions, international wrangling over rights, and the often-frustrating nature of working with Churchill. The archive, which chiefly covers A History of the English-Speaking Peoples and the Second World War memoirs, records the genesis and crafting of Churchill's books, their printing and binding, the agreement of royalties and rights, and working with international publishers and translators to bring them to an international market. Letters sent to Churchill and his agents were preserved in carbon copy and filed in the archive, the majority of which were initialled by Desmond Flower, director of Cassell. Some have manuscript additions and notes for internal use. Also filed were the letters received from Churchill's agents and other individuals outside the firm, including other publishers and newspapers. Internal memos contain considerable detail about print runs, costs, and deadlines. A highlight is a contract initialled four times by Churchill (2 January 1950), giving him greater control of the serial rights of the History of the English-Speaking Peoples. Churchill had signed the first contracts in the 1930s, which gave full serial rights to the newspaper conglomerate Amalgamated Press. As Churchill resumed the work after the war, his much-enlarged status allowed him to claw back some of these rights. Alongside this, the archive includes several copies of contracts between foreign and serial publishers selling rights to the History of the English-Speaking Peoples, as well as associated correspondence specifying royalty rates and settling disputes. The many international publishers involved, and titles being abridged and excerpted, resulted in crossed wires and legal challenges. Emery Reves, Churchill's agent for foreign editions and translations, writes many times expressing concern as to the legality of their editions, as he claimed his own international publication rights. The collection demonstrates the range of editions of Churchill's texts published by Cassell or licensed by them - from abridgements and excerpts, to new editions either cheaply sold by the Reprint Society or leather-bound deluxe versions by Heron Books and the Franklin Library. Other possible editions are raised and quashed, including regrettably a signed limited edition of The Second World War blocked by Churchill. A planned collection of Churchill's articles is dropped due to rights disputes. Circa 300 items, predominantly the publisher's retained carbon copies of letters (the majority initialled by author), also including typed letters and autograph letters signed from a range of recipients, copies of book contracts (one initialled by Churchill, see note), internal memorandums and notes, cables, and proof sheets. Occasional documents with some tears and loss, generally in very good condition. Throughout their partnership with Churchill, Cassell often requested cuts and rewrites. They successfully push for the first volume of The Second World War to be renamed from The Downward Path to The Gathering Storm. Similarly, the correspondence illustrates Churchill's particularness about his publications. The publishers delivered proof sheets of the book to Churchill (some of which are preserved here), and he requested wider margins and complained about the type design. Cassell pushed back - post-war paper restrictions meant they denied his request for larger type and blocked his plan to publish the war memoirs in 12 volumes. Beyond citing market conditions, Flower used his own authority as a publisher to rebut Churchill's wish to use Garamond rather than Bembo type. Churchill was clearly difficult to work with. Especially for the Second World War, he sought corrections right up to the last minute. As the book was going to print, he was especially unhappy with the many errors he thought had slipped in - the publishers sent their apologies and made excuses while refusing to halt production to bring in the changes. Some of the private internal correspondence indicates the publisher's occasional frustration with dealing with their star writer. Yet despite their wranglings, the partnership was very successful. The Second World War and History of the English-Speaking Peoples were two of the largest publishing projects of the 20th century, led to Churchill's award of the Nobel Peace Prize, and made both Churchill and Cassell a tremendous amount of money. As the publishers wrote to Churchill on 18 March 1954 "You have given Cassell the most monumental work it has ever published in its long life. It is impossible to express in words what we all feel about this, for you have added the grandest page to our history". The Blitz destroyed almost all Cassell's papers from before the war, so the archive has little from before this date except a few 1930s contracts. The collection mostly ends with Churchill's death in 1965, but a few later letters on posthumous publishing rights are present, and it concludes in 1990 with a claim by Churchill's estate that rights had now reverted from Cassell to them. Cassell was bought by publishing conglomerates and restructured in the 1990s. When their offices were closed down a huge quantity of papers were sold and discarded. This collection was purchased at the time and has since been in private hands. It is unknown whether any other Churchill material was separated at the time and survives, but the recollection of those involved is that most of Cassell's material went in the skip. The archive represents an important untouched research area - the overwhelming majority of the papers are not published. Offered in partnership with Peter Harrington, London. Signed. …

Add to basketCondition: As New. For six years, Churchill?s had been a voice in the wilderness, crying out against the mortal danger posed by Hitler?s Nazi Germany. However, Great Britain was lost in a pipe dream of peace, and Churchill was ignored and even scorned. Then the first wave of German military might overwhelmed Poland in September 1939, and Churchill was revealed as a prophet rather than a Cassandra. After a quiet winter, in April 1940 the Nazi juggernaut smashed into Denmark and Norway, followed shortly by invasions of France, Belgium, Luxembourg and the Netherlands. In early May, as Norway tottered and the prospects for Britain became worse than bleak, elements in both the country?s major parties revolted against Prime Minister Neville Chamberlain?s management of the war. Members of Chamberlain?s own Conservative Party were insistent on a change of leadership, with Leopold Amery, on the floor of the House of Commons, quoting from Cromwell and saying: ?Depart I say, and let us have done with you. In the name of God, go!? Chamberlain was naturally shaken by this and reluctantly agreed to resign. Some Conservatives initially promoted Lord Halifax as his successor, as in fact did King George VI. However, as the only leader not tainted by the disastrous appeasement policies of the 1930's, it was obvious that Churchill alone could unite the nation. Moreover, the Labour Party, for all its old distrust of Churchill's anti-Socialism, recognized the depth of his commitment to the defeat of Hitler and insisted on him. A coalition government was formed that included all elements save the far left and right and the nationalist parties. It was headed by a War Cabinet of five, which included at first both Chamberlain and Halifax - a wise but also magnanimous recognition of the numerical strength of Chamberlainite conservatism - and two Labour leaders, Clement Attlee and Arthur Greenwood. The Cabinet became an agency of swift decision, and the government that it controlled remained representative of all major groups and parties. Churchill himself took, in addition to the leadership of the House of Commons, the Ministry of Defense, thus emphasizing his concentration on the conduct of the war. In fact, at this point, the Prime Minister?s life and career became one with Britain's story and its survival. Churchill's task was to inspire resistance at all costs, to organize the defense of the island, and to make it the bastion for an eventual return to the continent of Europe. To do this, he needed to breathe a new spirit into the government and a new resolve into the people. His magnificent oratory, his immense confidence, and his stubborn refusal to accept anything but total victory, did just that, and rallied the nation, particularly during the dark days between 1940 and the turn of the tide in 1943. The speeches he made in accomplishing this are classics and among the most moving and important ever made in the English language. From his first blunt talk to the House of Commons on May 13, 1940, in which he warned "I have nothing to offer but blood, toil, tears and sweat"; to his pledge to resist - "We shall fight on the beaches. We shall fight on the landing grounds. We shall fight in the fields, and in the streets, we shall fight in the hills. We shall never surrender!"; to his memorable plea for strength and courage - ?Let us therefore brace ourselves to our duties, and so bear ourselves that, if the British Empire and its Commonwealth last for a thousand years, men will still say, ?This was their finest hour??; through his remarks on the futility of the U.S. trying to avoid involvement in European problems - ?There was no use in saying ?We don't want it; we won?t have it; our forebears left Europe to avoid these quarrels; we have founded a new world which has no contact with the old.? There was no use in that;? his words effectively inspired the people and led ultimately to victory in the war. Churchill himself deni.…
