Putnam published Washington Irving, William Cullen Bryant, Edgar Allen Poe, and James Fenimore Cooper. Wikipedia contains a lengthy write-up on Putnam and his prominent grandson George P. His publishing firm was extremely successful and remains today as part of the Penguin publishing group. He strong interest in art led him to become one of the founders of the Metropolitan Museum of Art; he was the author of several books on history, biography, and reference.

The book has been repaired by attaching a strip of leather along the gutters and wrapping around the spine. The original spine lettering of the title has been retained by cutting out a sqare of leather to expose it. The corners ha…ve been covered in the same leather. A rudimentary but effective repair - the book is tight and square inside the boards. Has a color foldout "chart of history" as the frontispiece (one small tear at a fold), original pink endpapers, and 840 pages. A scarce book of historical facts and dates.
