Sehr gutes Ex. - Englisch. // Some Remarks on Gerd Rohling's "The Wrong Note" and other Works / Andrea Hilgenstock. // Gerd Rohling (* 1946 in Krefeld) ist ein deutscher Maler und Objektkünstler. 1979 gründete er unter anderem mit Frank Dornseif, Ter Hell und Reinhard Pods die Berlin…er Künstlergruppe und gleichnamige Selbsthilfegalerie "1/61" . 1980 erhielt er das PS1-Stipendium, New York. Rohling gilt als ein vielreisender Künstler, der Teile des Jahres in Neapel, Mumbai, Rio de Janeiro, Ghana, Thailand oder den USA verbringt. In seiner frühen Zeit wurde er mit der gestischen Malerei der Neuen Wilden in Verbindung gebracht. In den 1980er Jahren wandte er sich der Objektkunst zu. Aus einfachsten Materialien, wie Abfallteilen aus Papier, Glas, Metall oder Kunststoff gestaltete er mit großem Farbeinsatz sowohl Objektensembles als auch raumfüllende Installationen. "Aus Pappe und Plastikresten, mit Sprayer-Unbekümmertheit und Quasi-Lässigkeit baut und bemalt er urban-abenteuerliche Szenerien." 2009 zeigte er in der Ausstellungshalle Hamburger Bahnhof die Installation Wasser und Wein, für die er unterschiedliche Gefäße in einen neuen Zusammenhang transformierte. 2013 konzipierte er für das Weserburg Museum für moderne Kunst mit der Ausstellung "Inside - Outside" eine Gesamtinstallation, die die neueren Werkserien "Immer im Bilde - Rouge" und "Sweet n Sour" zeigte und bei der Rohling "in spielerischem Umgang" neben Malerei, Skulpturen, auch Filme einsetzte. Rohling lebt und arbeitet in Berlin. Als Mitglied des Deutschen Künstlerbundes nahm er zwischen 1977 und 1984 an mehreren DKB-Jahresausstellungen teil. // Once upon a time a magician's apprentice set off to see the world. As a tourist he travels through foreign countries. He does not speak their languages; he can only guess their customs and traditions. He wants to learn, to understand other peoples. "What can they do, that I cannot?" he asks himself. His travels lead him to India. There our man meets a snake charmer who is sitting in front of a wall, playing his flute and luring a cobra out of its basket. The snake charmer seems unperturbed by the aggressive snake. The magician's apprentice and a little boy watch, spellbound and afraid. Will the cobra escape? Will it bite its charmer? The bite could be fatal. But no, the snake's master has everything under control. Using the accumulated knowledge of generations, he gently moves his flute up and down. Bound by the spell of manipulation, the snake obeys, as if it were the most natural thing in the world. The snake charmer suddenly grabs the snake by the middle and puts it back into its basket. The ritual is ,over. Lid closed. All is well. The audience is impressed. The tourist from Europe now wants to own such a flute. At home he wants to show them what the Indian performed for him. The turbaned snake charmer sells him his flute and gives strict instructions: "You must be very careful." The magician's apprentice thinks: "But I have seen and taken careful note of everything. Now I will also perform this miracle." Back home, he conducts the experiment. In front of a large iron barrel he raises the flute to his lips. The alluring call is heard. But nothing happens. Why? Is it because he is not wearing a turban? Because his background is not a spiritual, but an intellectual one? Or has the Indian palmed a fake off on him? Perhaps Europe is just not the right place to conjure up spirits - even though the baskets are bigger here.
