The Yaddo Estate has hosted over 6,000 author's and writers, including Milton Avery, James Baldwin, Leonard Bernstein, Truman Capote, Aaron Copland, Philip Guston, Patricia Highsmith, Langston Hughes, Ted Hughes, Alfred Kazin, Ulysses Kay, Jacob Lawrence, Sylvia Plath, Katherine Anne Porter, Mario Puzo, Clyfford Still, and Virgil Thomson. "The Story of Yaddo" was published in 1923, after the death of Katrina Trask, one of the founders. It includes a forward by Katrina written in the winter of 1917-1918, explaining that she has "left a bequest that The Story Of Yaddo should be privately printed and kept on record for those who are to come to Yaddo in the future" and also that copies should be printed and distributed "amongst those who have shared the life during these years of joy and gladness." Katrina also writes in her forward that in the eight years after her husband's death, she lived alone in one of the farm-houses with Allena. Allena Pardee was one of the founders of Yaddo and an Honorary President of Yaddo, a close friend of Spencer and Katrina Trask. Pardee died at the age of 94 on the Yaddo Estate. This copy of "The Story of Yaddo" includes a letter from Allena Pardee to a friend, May, dated November 1923 on Yaddo stationary, writing of Katrina's wish to distribute copies of the books to those who have shared in the life at Yaddo. Also laid in is a card presumably from Spencer & Katrina, written years earlier. Very Good or Near Fine. …
