The book is signed by the author on the first page (half title page) with the date of 10/27/09 just under his signature. The pictorial cover is in like new condition. 247 pages. In the winter of 1944/45, the Allied Armies suffered 24,000 dead, wounded, captured, or missing GIs in the fifty square miles of green hell called the Hurtgen Forest. In addition, frozen or wet feet, respiratory ailments and other non-fatal injuries disabled 9,000. The fight raged on for ninety days with no clear and defined objectives. All these brave men were killed with no material gain. This is the story of Ben F. Strickland, Jr. who was one of the brave soldiers killed in the Hurtgen Forest, but represents one of the many thousands who served in The Big Red One. Signed by Author(s).…

Hardcover. Condition: Fair. No Dust Jacket. On offer is an interesting diary detailing the daily life of a young woman in wartime America. The diary belonged to Norma Tyson Bowen (1921-1997). Norma was born to Daniel Franklin and Lula White (Tyson) Bowen in Delaware. In 1944, Norma married William Woodrow Snyder of Madrid, New York. They married at the New Castle Army Air Base in Delaware, where Snyder was stationed. They had one child, David. At the time she wrote this diary, Norma lived in Wilmington, Delaware with her parents. She marries William (Bill) in April of 1944, and they live together for the remainder of the diary, which concludes in October, 1944. In 1940, at the age of 19, Bowen is a student nurse studying at St. Francis Hospital in Delaware and living in the nurses' quarters. Entries detail the daily routines of class studies and practical work on a hospital floor. By late summer, she has completed school and spends months job hunting, naming the hospitals at which she drops applications. Throughout school she is involved with boys named Andy and Dennis. In November of 1940, she begins working for a Mr. Bogach. She does not appear to have stayed in the nursing field. Census data and her notes in her diary indicate that she worked in administrative roles. "Went to morning prayer. On duty from 7: 30 to 9: 30, 4: 00 till 7: 00. In class from 9: 30 til: Had test. In evening studied for anatomy test. Andy called. In bed 9: 30" [Jan 30, 1940]. "Worked from 1-3, 6-9 Went to Lena's in afternoon. In eve Adrian De Jong came to see me. In bed 12: 00" [June 5, 1941]"Up early worked from 1-3, 6-9 In eve went to movies with Dennis. Saw Belle Starr Home at 11: 30" [Dec 6, 1941]"Started to work at McKees Optical Co. Hrs from 8: 30 5: 30 spent evening at home in bed early" [June 30, 1942]"Wedding day. Married 9 A. M. N. C. A. A. B. Left for Madrid, NY 22: 44. Had weddinghence. Chaplain Packs here for reception" [April 8, 1944]. She makes note of the U. S. Declarations of war but the war doesn't figure prominently in her daily life, other than the friendship she developed with William Snyder. In November, 1943, she visited the New Castle Army Air Base where she met Snyder. They began dating and in January, 1944 were engaged. They married in April of 1944. In the memorandum section at the back, Bowen has noted key events by date, mixing personal, local and global notes to create a fascinating timeline. An excerpt: "Dec 24, 1940 Got 20 piece dresser setDec 7, 1941 US declared war on JapanJune 30, 1942 Began work at S. L McKee's at 8: 30AMFeb 26, 1943 Grand-dad Bowen passed away 10: 55 Memorial HospitalNov 17, 1943 Met Wm W. Snyder at New Castle Army baseFeb 4, 1944 Bill and I got our diamond and double wedding bandsSept 23, 1944 Baked my first layer cake with mocha icing for Bill"This diary is an excellent window into the day-to-day life of a young woman in America during the war years. For a social historian, the value lies in the detail she notes of daily life. A researcher or student of Women's Studies would find this a wonderfully detailed look at the role of women in this time period a role that was undergoing significant change. Measuring 5.5x4 inches, it contains 365 pages and is approximately 95% complete. The diary spans January 1940 through October 1944. Two typically powerful and evocative artworks by Wragg. The first artwork, depicting a solitary praying figure, is signed and dated on the foot; the second, showing a sleeping group, presumably underground during an air raid, is undated but almost certainly from around the same time. Neither were, as far as we could determine, published. Wragg (1903-1976) was "a commercial graphic artist, producing posters and illustrations for magazines, and illustrating a variety of books throughout a career which extended for almost 50 years. His most significant work, however, set him apart from any other British twentieth-century illustrator. His images are savagely powerful, deriving from his fervent practical Christianity, pacifism, and sense of social justice. And they had a notable impact on public opinion, in a way that is unimaginable now" (Brook, p. 8). Judy Brook, Arthur Wragg: Twentieth-century Artist, Prophet and Jester, 2001. Two artworks, on paper and mounted together on card, 510 x 630 mm. Numbered in blue pencil on top right corner. Light discolouring to edges. In very good condition. …

A group of 31 letters home, in ink and pencil, most with accompanying envelopes, from Frank Depew, a young man just finishing high school in Great Falls, Montana, who volunteered to serve in the infantry at the commencement of the Spanish American War. Approx. 110 pages, some on "Remember the Maine" letterhead, all in a neat hand. The First Montana Volunteer Infantry mustered in in May 1898 and began their training at Camp Robert B. Smith, near Helena. In one of Depew's first four letters from camp he provides his family with a detailed list of his schedule which began with reveille at 5:30 in the morning and went non-stop until taps at 10pm. On May 26 the company left Camp Smith by train for San Francisco, carrying a regimental flag that had been presented to them by the people of Helena. They arrived in San Francisco on May 31 where they were welcomed by the Red Cross and went into camp some 4 miles from the docks. They did six hours of drills daily, which he describes in his June 21 letter: "Drill skirmishes always keep a distance of two yards between men. The firing line is divided into divisions and when the order to advance by rushes is given one division advances in double time about fifteen yards in front of the rear ones while the others fire and so on until they get about 60 yards from the enemy when rapid fire begins and we fix bayonets and at 30 we charge. . . . Today our Battalion had a sham battle and had a hospital in the rear; some men were wounded and taken on stretchers to where they were supposed to be bandaged up etc." He also sends his mother a small sketch of the camp layout, reports on the food, and informs his father he has seen Uncle Charlie and Aunt Jenny Depew and their son Henry who have a nice big house in San Francisco and who have been very kind to him. He mentions the names of fellow soldiers and tent mates, as well as one of the commanding officers, Lt. Col. Wallace. On July 16 he writes to his parents that he has seen the USS Pennsylvania which would carry the troops to the Philippines, steel clad and frame and "as narrow as a knife blade." He and his friends Seth and Jay, "the boys who left the high school to volunteer" would soon be "in the middle of the Pacific near the Equator sailing for the Philippines with an army of invasion." His letter of July 26 is from aboard ship where he says he spends his time reading "articles by Bryan and other good men in 'free silver,' monopoly, &c." As they were on their way to the Philippines, the Spanish surrendered and by the time the USS Pennsylvania arrived in Manila Bay on August 24, the Spanish American War was essentially over though the armistice would not be signed until December 1898. Depew's letter home to his parents, dated August 30, 1898, is from Cavite: "We came ashore the 24th and took quarters in the old garrison." He took a ten mile walk to the new Spanish fort and its three modern guns. "It would do you good to see the havoc Dewey's shells made on the guns and masonry." He includes a small pencil drawing of ships in the harbor, identifying a few by name, and mentioning he could see the wrecks of eleven Spanish War vessels there. He also says his regiment has received praise from both Gen. Merritt and Admiral Dewey already for not losing any men on the crossing even though the Pennsylvania was the worst ship with the worst food and quarters. He also takes a few lines to express his views of the native population: "Fruit here is rather scarce the natives being too lazy to cultivate anything. They are, I think, a very degraded race, being filthy low minded and dishonest. I have seen only two Americans that live here, one keeps a saloon and the other a grocery store." His letters from October reflect the restlessness of the troops as they continue as an army of occupation: "We are all disgusted for having to stay here so long, after the war is over to garrison these darned islands. We haven't got a single thing to do here and all the reading. …
