Joseph Roth (1894-1939) war ein österreichischer Schriftsteller und Journalist.

September 1894 in Brody bei Lemberg als Sohn eines jüdischen Getreidehändlers geboren. Nach Schule und Matura studierte er Germanistik und Philosophie im damals österreichischen Lemberg und in Wien. 1916 meldete er sich als Einjährig-Freiwilliger zum Militärdienst. Während seines Kriegsdienstes in Galizien veröffentlichte er erste Gedichte und Feuilletons in Prager und Wiener Zeitungen. Ab 1918 arbeitete er als Journalist zuerst in Wien, später in Berlin.1922 heiratete er Friederike Reichler, die 1928 an Schizophrenie erkrankte und 1940 aufgrund der nazionalsozialistischen Euthanasiegesetze in einer Linzer Heilanstalt ermordet wurde. 1923-1932 war er Korrespondent der »Frankfurter Zeitung« und veröffentlichte zahlreiche Beiträge und Artikelserien auch in anderen Blättern. Als Romancier setzt sich Roth zunächst mit den traumatischen Erfahrungen ehemaliger Frontoffiziere auseinander (1927 »Flucht ohne Ende«); später dann erfolgreich u.a. mit der mythisierenden Beschreibung der Habsburgermonarchie vor ihrem Untergang. Anfang 1933 ging er nach Paris ins Exil und arbeitete dort an Exilzeitungen und -zeitschriften mit. Gezeichnet durch Schicksalsschläge, enttäuscht über die politischen Zustände und alkoholkrank starb Roth am 27. Mai 1939 in einem Pariser Armenhospital.

Die Ehe ist unglücklich. Erna, eher Mittelmaß, erhält an dieser und jener Provinzbühne ein Engagement. In Berlin steigt Erna zum Filmstar auf und lebt, getrennt von Arnold, in einer Luxusvilla bei Potsdam mit Damen zusammen. Arnold hat eine Stelle als Filmredakteur an einer Mittagszeitung und arbeitet dort unablässig mit seinen bescheidenen Mitteln an der Karriere seiner Frau, die er vergöttert, auf die er nichts kommen lässt. Erna geht fremd, stürzt bei einem Ausritt und verarmt. Arnold erspielt in Monte Carlo kleinere Gewinne. Das Paar lebt davon. Hinkend rappelt sich Erna auf und bekommt eine Rolle in Hollywood. Arnold, mittlerweile ein echter Musikant geworden, endet als Musikclown in einem Varieté.
