Among the many railroad books that I acquired last fall (and have been listing of late), I found this small, neat book about the lighthouses around New York City. Soft cover. Condition: Very Good. VENICE THE MENTOR AUGUST 18, 1913 VENICE THE ISLAND CITY 6 SEPIA PRINTS LAID-IN. I have recently acquired a box load of vintage The Mentor magazines, dating from about 1913 to 1922. My inclination is to offer them in "year lots," organized in lots from a given year together, with a minimum of fu…ss & bother but we shall see. Actually, some of these back issues of The Mentor need or should be offered singly, such as this one. I began listing the youngest issues I have on- hand (from 1922 & 1921) so here is one of the oldest (1913), to wit: "The MentorA Wise and Faithful Guide and FriendVenice, The Island City," Vol. 1, August 18, 1913, No. 27. This issue includes an article (only 12 pages) by Dwight L. Elmendorf, Lecturer and Traveler, and also six stand-alone, sepia toned, prints (St. Mark's Cathedral, Doge's Palace and Campanile, Bridge of Sighs, Grand Canal, Typical Venetian Canal, and the Rialto Bridge), each with a full page of double column explanations on the rear. Condition: This magazine issue is in very good condition. The soft covers are rubbed and bumped and show edge wear, including bent upper right-hand corners. The staples show a bit of rusting but this is hard to see and does not affect the pages. There are a few insect holes in the rear cover and the spine tips are bit ragged. The interior pages are clean and bright but share the bent corners. One or two of the six prints have one soiled edge and some edge wear as well but are generally clean and attractive. I did see one tiny tear in the Rialto Bridge print. No age toning or foxing to speak of. This magazine copy is not ex-library.

Soft cover. Condition: Very Good. No Jacket. RAILROADS LANCASTER PA AREA THE ROAD TO PARADISE STRASBURG MOEDINGER 1983. I have listed a large number of books about railroads and many of them have sold. My goal now is to clean up the offerings with some others that for one reason or another did not get listed, mainly because I ra…n out of steam. Please find a large-sized but very slender (40 pages) soft cover book titled: The Road to Paradise The Story of the Rebirth of the Strasburg Rail Road, by William M. Moedinger. This book (8 ½ x 11 inches, 40 pages) was published by the Strasburg Rail Road Shop, Inc. of Lancaster, PA, dated 1983. The book is very well illustrated with pages and pages of vintage b&w photos of the Railroad and its rolling stock and locomotives. Condition: This book is in very good condition. The soft covers show normal handling wear, particularly edge wear at the corners and spine tips. The lower right-hand corner is a bit dog-eared. There is also a blemish on the front cover where a price sticker (I presume?) was amateurishly removed. Inside, the book is unmarked and the pages and plates are clean and bright throughout. As an annual resident of the State of Florida, I was well aware that one of the local native American tribes was called The Seminole but rather ignorant of their culture and its history. Fortunately, I… found this small softcover book which helped to fill in the gaps. This small softcover book by Marwyn S. Gabarino (7 x 9 ¼ inches, 112 pages) was published by Chelsea House Publishers of New York dated 1989 as part of the Indians of North America series. The book is modestly illustrated, mostly with b&w photos, many vintage but also a section of color about the patchwork of typical Seminole clothes. Condition: This book is in near fine condition. As noted elsewhere, I have a number of other local history books from the Mohawk Valley and the Utica, New York area which need new homes. This will be the next one (but not the last), title…d: The Sauquoit Valley, by Evelyn R. Edwards. This small-sized soft cover book (6 ½ x 9 ¼ inches, 128 pages) was published by Arcadia Publishing of Charleston, South Carolina, dated 2000 and the First Printing, one of their Images of America Series. There are also some small maps of each of the villages and hamlets along the Valley. Condition: This book is in near fine condition. It has obviously been read as the soft covers are slightly sprung but that is the only sign of wear and tear. It is unmarked except for the author s inscription. The binding is tight and sound. I have recently acquired a box load of vintage The Mentor magazines, dating from about 1913 to 1922. My inclination is to offer them in year lots, organized in lots from a given year together…, with a minimum of fuss & bother but we shall see. In any case, two nice clean copies from 1921, as follows (please be sure to see the photos to better understand these copies): - February 1921 (Vol. 9, No. 1, Serial Number 216) Greece Old and New The Power of the Near East in History and Today, by Aristides Phoutrides. - April 1921 (Vol. 9, No. 3, Serial Number 218) Ireland Today, by R. No Binding. Condition: Very Good. No Jacket. 1st Edition. IN FLANDERS FIELDS THE POPPIES GROW S0USA & MCCRAE SHEET MUSIC G. SCHIRMER 1918. I do not often delve into the realm of sheet music but sometimes I cannot resist. Here is one sheath of six pages of classic music that I have had for some time. Please find: In Flanders Fiel…ds the Poppies Grow, the song with piano accompaniment, by Lieut. John Philip Sousa with words by Lieut.-Col. John McCrae. This sheath of sheet music measures 9 x 12 inches and was published by G. Schirmer of New York and Boston, dated 1918. This same music is touted on the back page of this sheath as Four New Songs by John Philip Sousa, which leads me to suppose that this is the First Edition. The cover is decorated with a red and green image of the cemetery at Flanders with the poppies growing among the gravestones (please see the photos). From what I can tell online, this is a very scarce piece of sheet music; only one copy found and that in British Columbia (which stands to reason as I am told this was a favorite of Post World War I Canada.)Condition: This sheath of sheet music is in very good condition. The covers show some very light handling wear, mainly some minor bumping to the lower left-hand corner. Otherwise, the pages are clean, unmarked and unblemished. Pages 1- 2 have a once-bent corner, barely perceptible. Please see the photos to verify the superlative condition.

Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. No Jacket. KENTUCKY AUTHOR JOHN FOX JR. 2 IN ONE KENTUCKIAN & A KNIGHT OF THE CUMBERLAND. Here is a book with two novels by Kentuckian John Fox Jr. who was a war correspondent during the Spanish-American War, and a friend and contemporary of Teddy Roosevelt and some of other adventure prone indiv…iduals of the time. He reinvented himself as a raconteur, telling tales of the Kentucky and the land in which he was raised, even accompanying his story telling with backwoods ballads. I am pleased to offer a nice book, published by Scribner s (for whom he worked for a period as a war correspondent before these were published) that includes the two novels: The Kentuckians, and A Knight of the Cumberland. This small hard cover book (5 ¼ x 7 ½ inches, 259 pages total) is bound in khaki green with an embossed gilt flower medallion on the cover and gilt titles on the spine. The books were illustrated by W.T. Smedley and F.C. Yohn and published by Charles Scribner s Sons of New York in 1912. The top edge is gilt and this book belongs on the bookshelf of someone who loves the history and folklore of the great state of Kentucky! Condition: This book is in very good condition and that is one of the reasons which prompted me to offer it, and at a very reasonable price. There is some edge wear to the hard covers, nothing significant. The spine is faded a bit but the titles still clear and attractive. There is an inked former owner s name on the front endpaper but that is the only mark I found in the book. The pages and plates (of which there are 8, including a well-preserved tissue protected frontispiece) are clean and bright throughout. Both hinges are intact although the binding is lightly cracked at the half-title but the binding still seems tight and sound. This book is not ex-library or a remainder.

Hardcover. Condition: Near Fine. No Jacket. 1st Edition. I have a lot of books about Picasso listed and hope you noticed. I thought I would add a contemporary book about him, something still found in bookstores. Please find: "Pablo Picasso 1881-1973" by Carsten-Peter Warncke. This medium-sized hard cover book was published by Ba…rnes & Noble Books of New York, and I should add, they did a fine job doing it. The book is very sturdy and substantial, most of the images of his works are in color and the colors are bright and vivid. Please see my photo of the Table of Contents for your further information. It is my impressioin that there are examples of Picasso's work that I have never seen before? Condition: This book is, not surprisingly because it is contemporary book about Picasso, in like new (near fine) condition. Inside and out, it is pristine and would make a good gift. Pablo Picasso (illustrator).

Hardcover. Condition: Near Fine. No Jacket. 1st Edition. Quoting from the Preface by G. Bernard Shaw: "In the spring of 1890, the Fabian Society, finding itself at a loss for a course of lectures to occupy its summer meetings, was compelled to make shift with a series of papers put forward under the general heading of "Socialism… in Contemporary Literature". The Fabian Essayists, strongly pressed to do "something or other" for the most part shook their heads; but in the end." some of them came through including this work by Shaw titled: "The Quintessence of Ibsenism". I include a photo of the Table of Contents for this volume for your information. Condition: This book is in near fine condition. The dark green hard covers are clean and bright with just the faintest sign of bumping to the corners and spine tips. The paper label on the spine is a bit darkened and very lightly chipped along its edge. Inside, the book is unmarked and the pages are clean and bright throughout, without toning or foxing. The interior pages are clean and bright. Both hinges are intact and the binding is tight and sound. This book is not ex-library or a remainder.

Contact seller5-star sellerSoft cover. Condition: Good. No Jacket. THE GREAT COAL SCHOONERS OF NEW ENGLAND 1870-1909 W.J. LEWIS PARKER 1948. If you have read through any of my maritime history related book listings, doubtless you will have noted that I lament having been born after these huge sailing vessels stopped plying our coasts. I cannot say the sam…e for the boats described in this book. How would you like to be aboard a multi-masted wooden sailing vessel with more than 1000 tons of coal aboard in the rough and rocky seas of New England. Please find then: "The Great Coal Schooners of New England 1870-1909," by Lt. W.J. Lewis Parker, U.S.C.G. (not surprising that this book was written by a Coast Guardsman!). This medium-sized soft cover book (7 x 10 inches, 135 pages) was published by the Marine Historical Association, dated December 1948, with no mention of edition. The book is bound in dark blue soft boards with silver gilt titles on the cover and spine. The book is nicely illustrated, as the list shows, with 22 plates and one fold-out diagram of the configuration of the vessel in question. Condition: This book is in good condition, with some issues. The soft cover boards show wear, from rubbing and bumping but the titles, on both cover and spine, are still easily legible. Inside, the book is unmarked but there are some minor instances of soiling including the rust marks from a paper-clip that was once affixed to the covers. The interior pages and plates themselves are generally clean and bright, without toning or foxing. The binding is still tight, in part because someone applied some librarian's tape to the first pages. This book is not ex-library or a remainder.

I must admit I opened this book with the hopes of being moderately amused, but times change, alas, and I found most of the riddles pretty corny. However, it is a vintage example, from… 1949, of the sort of things that, as the front cover of the dust jacket notes, were Fun for Boys and Girls. I am pleased to offer: 1001 Riddles, compiled by George Carlson. This small hard cover book (7 x 8 inches, un-numbered but about 80 pages?) was published by Platt and Munk, dated 1949, a First Edition it would appear and No. 502A. The book is bound in red cloth with black titles and decorations on the cover and protected by a colorful pictorial dust paper dust jacket. The riddles are given sequentially with a key to the answers at the end of the book. Condition: This book is in very good condition. The dust jacket shows some edge wear including two large tears at the top & bottom of the spine, front and rear. The hard covers are clean with just a hint of wear to the corners and along the gutter, but with no real bumping or damage. Inside, the book is unmarked and the pages are clean and bright from cover to cover. Both hinges are intact, and the binding is tight and sound. This book is not ex-library or a remainder.
