*The UK General Election of 1865 was won by Lord Palmerston for the Liberals, increasing their large majority over the Earl of Derby's Conservatives to more than 80. The Liberal Party were the transformed Whigs, having changed their name since the previous election in 1859. Palmerston, holding the Devon constituency of Tiverton, died later in the same year and was succeeded as Prime Minister by Lord John Russell. Robert Jardine, above, standing for the Liberal Party, was elected in Ashburton in 1865 but the constituency was abolished in 1868. Seller Inventory # 57846
