pp. vi, 418.,Small 8vo, Signature on front free endpaper: 'Robert Verree his Book (date) 1796', then below is a smaller signature (in a different hand) which cannot be deciphered for certain, but is probably that of a great grand-daughter, Elizabeth Watson (note: these signatures and writing repeated on the inside of the rear board). The bottom half of the second front free endpaper has been excised, and on the top half is written: 'Mary Watson her book by the gift of her Father Robert Verree 10th Mo (?) 1799.' Then below that is written 'Sarah Watson's Book 1820', and below that is the signature of Elizabeth Watson. Robert Verree was born in Lower Dublin Township, Philadelphia, in 1733. He married Ann Chapman in 1760, and they had two children: Mary (born 1761) and a son James. Mary married Thomas Watson in 1789, and her father died in 1799. Mary and Thomas Watson had several children, including a daughter named Sarah. The Verree family bible (containing these details) was donated to the Pennsylvania Historical Society in 1927. Robert Verree was the owner of a grist mill in 1777 which supplied flour to the Continental troops, and which the British, as a consequence, destroyed. Our copy of this book is bound in full contemporary shep, with gilt rules to the pine and a morocco label showing the abbreviated title. The front joint is cracked. The rear hinge is tight. Usual age-toning to contents. Still a good copy, if handled with care. The first American edition. Seller Inventory # 9900034344
