About this Item
Octavo, pp. [1-3] 4-226 [227-240: ads], original pictorial white wrappers printed in gray green, orange and black. Early U.S. edition. Issued as "Munro's Library," Double Number, volume 50, number 788, May 31, 1887. One of several pirated American editions which appear to have been published in July 1887. Rand, McNally & Co.'s "Globe Library," No. 26 with front wrapper dated 1 February 1887 was listed in Publishers' Weekly 9 July 1887, as was Harper's authorized American edition, published as "Harper's Handy Series" No. 139 with front wrapper dated 1 July 1887. Publication date for both Longmans, Green's UK edition and Harper's authorized American edition was 1 July 1887. Several other unauthorized American editions, including Norman L. Munro "Munro's Library" edition dated 31 May 1887 and George Munro's "Seaside Library" edition dated 29 June 1887 were listed in PW a week later, 16 July 1887. Scott, p. 20. Spine ends chipped and several other small chips from spine panel, chip from lower fore-edge corner of front cover and first and second leaves, a few leaves dog-eared, mild general dust soiling to wrappers, text block printed on wood pulp paper and therefore somewhat darkened but, in general, the pages are not brittle, as is often the case with these notoriously fragile subscription library books. While the Harper edition is most likely the first American edition, this Norman L. Munro edition is far less common and certainly is a very early American edition, if not the true first. (#158672).
