Interior with some yellowing throughout.; Netsuke' are the small carved figures used in Japan by all classes to support on the 'obi' (sash) such portable articles as were required in everyday life, the 'netsuke' being secured to the article by means of a cord. They were in use from not much before the sixteenth century until recent times. Very few 'netsuke' left Japan until after the Revolution of 1868 when that country emerged from a self- imposed seclusion from the rest of the world that had lasted more than two centuries. In this book the author gives a historical and critical account both of the more notable individual craftsmen and of the various schools that were formed in the principal towns. Among the many art objects that appeared in succeeding years on the European market none aroused greater enthusiasm than the 'netsuke', though owing to the small repute in which it was held in its own country it was one of the cheapest. The bulk of them found their way into the hands of a comparatively small group of collectors, especially in London and Paris. On the death of their owners in the first quarter of the present century these collections were dispersed at auctions. The author, who was fortunate in having started a collection at just this time, has compiled the present work from the complete records of all pieces purchased and all others of importance and interest. There have been few previous works on the subject and with the appearance of this book a reliable account of the art of the 'Netsuke' carver is available for the first time. Seller Inventory # 1556B
