Two octavo volumes bound in the original blue cloth with bevelled boards, gilt titles to backstrips and upper boards; all edges gilt; original brown surface endpaper. The spines are a little faded but this is a most attractive work. Volume 1 (1868)iv (Errata tipped-in) 332pp, (ii), Volume 2 (1876) xxv, 386pp. Complete with all illustrations and Subscriber List to each volume. The architect was Sir Christopher wren but the church was largely destroyed in the war and not rebuilt until 1958 when it became the central church of the Royal Air Force. It is one of London's " island churches", the other being St. Mary Le Strand whose architect was James Gibbs under the Fifty Churches Act of 1711. Gibbs also added the steeple to St. Clement Danes. Doctor Samuel Johnson worshipped at this church and William Webb Ellis (Rugby Football) was a former rector who is commemorated on a plaque. Seller Inventory # 007292
