1950 first American edition Charles Scribner's Sons (New York), 6 x 8 1/2 inches tall black cloth hardcover in publisher's unclipped ($3.00) dust jacket, gilt signature to front cover, gilt lettering to spine, 'A' and Scribner's seal to copyright page, [12], 308 pp. Slight soiling, rubbing and edgewear to covers, with a bit of bumping to the upper tips. Very slight foxing or soiling to page edges. Slight foxing and tanning to blank front and rear pastedowns and free-endpapers. Otherwise, a very good copy - clean, bright and unmarked - in a dust jacket which is slightly to moderately soiled / foxed and edgeworn, with a couple of small creases and edge tears, but which is nicely preserved and displayed in a clear archival Brodart sleeve. ~II~ [2.0P] The story of Richard Cantwell, a war-ravaged American colonel stationed in Italy at the close of the Second World War, and his love for a young Italian countess. The title is derived from the last words of Confederate States Army General Thomas J. 'Stonewall' Jackson, who was mortally wounded by friendly fire during the American Civil War: 'Let us cross over the river and rest under the shade of the trees.' In the 19th century, this was understood to refer to the Jordan River and the passage to death and afterlife in Christianity. Seller Inventory # II-1042-14655
