First octavo edition of the first English Language edition, 8vo (165 x 110 mm); complete with the Table of Contents and the 'needful Caveat or admonition' by Ross at the end: [xx], 408, [xii] pp., title ruled within double borders, early auction label to upper pastedown, no signature O (as issued), eighteenth-century full leather, edges and spine ends repaired, rubbed at extremities. The first English translation of the Qur'an. This is the second edition of Alexander Ross's Qur'an in English, translated by Ross from a French translation by André du Ryer published in 1647. This edition was printed in octavo following the first edition that was printed in the same year in quarto format and includes 'A needfull caveat or admonition, for them who desire to know what use may be made of, or if there be danger in reading the Alcoran' (p.406) by Ross at the end of the text. Small Octavo, [20], 408 pages, [12], [2]; VG-; Rebound with 1/2-bound leather and light brown cloth boards; Spine banded with gilt lettering; Boards have very light wear to corners; Textblock has light-to-moderate uneven age-toning to edges and interiorly, some chipping to titlepage, and ink inscription of former owner on bottom of titlepage (Robert Sandilands). Shelved Case 4. The first English translation of the Qur'an, translated by Alexander Ross from a French translation by Ryer. Ross was a Scottish-born orientalist and served as a chaplain to Charles I. Some sources state that a quarto edition preceded the octavo. Robert Sandilands appears to have been born about 1656 in Aberdeen, where he served in various municipal leadership roles and engaged in the religious debates of his era (he was for time a Quaker, bit later rejected Quakerism for mainline Protestantism).
