First edition, the "Popular Edition" issue. The book was published in three formats in 1897: the "Popular Edition", the "Library Edition", and the "DeLuxe Edition" but, as noted by Richards, "the title page in each instance was postdated 1898". After the success of An Alphabet, William Nicholson began work on a series of illustrations depicting seasonal English sports in 1897. Nicholson showed his designs to Kipling during a visit to the author, and Kipling suggested writing verses to accompany them. When Nicholson informed his publisher, William Heinemann, the collaboration was approved, and Kipling was commissioned to provide the verses. The 12 sports represented are: hunting (January), coursing (February), racing (March), boating (April), fishing (May), cricket (June), archery (July), coaching (August), shooting (September), golf (October), boxing (November), and skating (December). Each is prefaced by a Kipling poem on the subject. Reviewing Nicholson's work, the Saturday Review of Politics, Literature, Science and Art stated, "of his twelve drawings, all are crafty, and ten at least are masterly. we get great economy and great expression combined in real fineness of decorative effect". David Alan Richards, Rudyard Kipling A Bibliography, 2010, A105; Saturday Review of Politics, Literature, Science and Art, 4 December 1897, p. 630. Quarto. Title page and 12 lithographs in colour from the original woodcuts by Nicholson. Original brown cloth-backed boards, front cover lettered in black and illustrated in colour, rear cover with publisher's device in colour. With the publisher's advertisements to rear. Extremities worn with a little loss, minor splitting and tears to hinges, some light toning and foxing, some offsetting as usual; a very good copy. Seller Inventory # 166744
