Discussing the depreciation of silver and the roles played by India, America and China, he notes "as yet no one can prove that the permanent value of silver - whether in relation to gold or in relation to commodities at large - will change so much as to render any alterations necessary". Editor and literary critic of The Economist as well as banker and economist, "Bagehot was described in retrospect by Lord Bryce as 'the most original mind of his generation'" (Asa Briggs).
